2022 Buick Envision - Backup Camera Intermittent Failure

Vehicle: 2022 Buick Envision Avenir

I've been having an annoying issue with the backup camera on my 2022 Buick Envision Avenir. Sometimes when I shift into reverse, the screen just stays black or shows a 'No Signal' message. Other times, it works perfectly fine.

It's completely random, and there's no pattern to it. I've checked for dirt on the camera lens, but it's clean. All other electrical features seem to be working fine. This is a relatively new car, so I'm surprised to be having this kind of problem.

Could it be a loose wire, or is the camera itself faulty? What's the best way to troubleshoot this before I have to take it in for service?

Intermittent backup camera failure on a newer vehicle like your 2022 Buick Envision Avenir is frustrating, but it's a common complaint across many modern cars. The issue typically stems from one of a few key areas:

  1. Loose or Corroded Wiring/Connections:

    • The most frequent culprit. The wiring harness for the backup camera runs from the camera itself (usually in the tailgate/trunk lid) through the body to the infotainment module. These wires can become pinched, frayed, or have loose connections due to vibrations or repeated opening/closing of the tailgate.
    • Action: Visually inspect the wiring where it enters the tailgate and along its path if accessible. Look for any signs of damage or corrosion at the connectors.
  2. Faulty Camera Module:

    • The camera unit itself can fail internally, especially if it's exposed to moisture or extreme temperatures. Intermittent operation often points to a failing component rather than a complete failure.
  3. Infotainment System Glitch:

    • Sometimes the infotainment system (the head unit) itself can experience a temporary software glitch that prevents it from properly receiving or displaying the camera feed. This is less common if other infotainment functions are working perfectly.
    • Action: Try a soft reset of the infotainment system (check your owner's manual for the specific button combination, often holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds) or disconnect the car battery for 15-20 minutes to perform a hard reset.
  4. Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) / Reverse Light Switch:

    • The car needs to know it's in reverse to activate the camera. If the TRS or reverse light switch is faulty, it might not consistently send the signal to the camera system. This is less likely if your reverse lights always come on reliably.

When to See a Shop: Given that your Envision is a 2022 model, it's likely still under warranty. Your best course of action is to schedule an appointment with a Buick dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (GDS2) that can communicate with the camera module and infotainment system to read specific fault codes, even if they don't trigger a dashboard warning light. This will allow them to accurately diagnose whether it's a wiring issue, a faulty camera, or a problem with the infotainment unit itself, and perform the repair under warranty.
