Vehicle: 2022 Buick Envision Avenir

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my 2022 Buick Envision Avenir. When I get up to speeds above 60 MPH, the steering wheel starts to shake noticeably. It's not a violent shake, but it's definitely there and gets worse the faster I go. Below 60 MPH, it's perfectly smooth.

I recently had the tires rotated, but the issue was present before and after the rotation. The tires themselves are relatively new, bought them about 8 months ago. Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension? Any ideas what I should check first?

A steering wheel shake that appears specifically at higher speeds (e.g., above 60 MPH) on your 2022 Buick Envision Avenir is a very common symptom, and it usually points to issues with your wheels, tires, or front suspension components.

Here are the most common causes:

  1. Tire Balance: This is the most frequent cause. Even new tires can lose their balance weights, or the weights can shift. An unbalanced tire creates vibrations that become more pronounced at higher speeds. Since you had a rotation, it's possible one or more tires are out of balance, or perhaps the issue moved to a different wheel.
  2. Wheel Runout/Damage: A bent rim or a tire that isn't perfectly round (radial runout) can also cause vibrations at speed. Even a minor impact can bend a rim slightly.
  3. Wheel Alignment: While alignment issues typically cause pulling or uneven tire wear, a severely misaligned front end can sometimes contribute to vibrations, especially if it's causing irregular tire contact with the road.
  4. Worn Front Suspension Components: Over time, components like tie rod ends, ball joints, or control arm bushings can wear out, introducing play into the steering and suspension system. This play can manifest as a vibration at higher speeds.
  5. Worn Wheel Bearings: A failing front wheel bearing can cause a humming noise and vibration that gets worse with speed. You might also notice some play if you try to wiggle the wheel when the car is lifted.

What to Check:

  • Tire Shop Visit: Start by having your tires re-balanced. Request a 'road force balance' if available, as it's more precise and can detect issues like tire runout. They can also inspect the rims for bends.

When to See a Shop:

  • Soon: While not an immediate breakdown risk, persistent vibrations can accelerate wear on other suspension and steering components. It's best to address it promptly.
  • Professional Inspection: If re-balancing the tires doesn't resolve the issue, a mechanic should inspect your front suspension and steering components for any signs of wear or looseness. They can check for play in tie rods, ball joints, and wheel bearings, and also assess your alignment.
