Vehicle: 2022 Buick Envision Avenir

I just got a "Service StabiliTrak" message and then a "Reduced Engine Power" warning on my 2022 Buick Envision Avenir, which only has about 25,000 miles on it. The car immediately lost power and felt sluggish, barely able to accelerate.

I pulled over, turned the car off, and restarted it, and the warnings cleared for a bit. However, they came back on during my next drive. I haven't scanned for codes yet, but this is a fairly new car, and I'm surprised to see such serious warnings.

What are the common causes for these warnings to appear together on an Envision? Is this something I can check easily, or does it require dealer intervention due to the car's age and potential warranty coverage?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The simultaneous appearance of 'Service StabiliTrak' and 'Reduced Engine Power' warnings on your 2022 Buick Envision is a critical issue that indicates a problem affecting the powertrain and potentially the vehicle's stability control system. Given the low mileage, this definitely warrants prompt attention.

Here are common causes for these combined warnings:

  1. Throttle Body Malfunction: A faulty electronic throttle body is a very frequent cause of both 'Reduced Engine Power' and 'Service StabiliTrak' warnings. If the throttle body isn't operating correctly, the engine's power output is restricted, and the StabiliTrak system may disable itself because it can't accurately control engine torque.

  2. Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor: A failing APP sensor can send incorrect signals to the engine control module (ECM), leading to the ECM misinterpreting driver input, which can trigger reduced power mode and affect StabiliTrak operation.

  3. Engine Misfires or Other Powertrain Faults: Severe engine misfires (e.g., P030x codes) or other critical powertrain issues can cause the ECM to command a 'Reduced Engine Power' mode to protect the engine. The StabiliTrak system often disables itself when the engine is in reduced power mode.

  4. Wheel Speed Sensors/ABS Module: While less likely to directly cause 'Reduced Engine Power,' issues with wheel speed sensors or the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) module can trigger 'Service StabiliTrak.' If these issues are severe enough, they could indirectly affect powertrain operation, but typically the throttle body is the primary suspect for both warnings together.

  5. Wiring/Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or loose connectors to critical sensors (like the throttle body or APP sensor) can cause intermittent signals, leading to these warnings.

When to See a Shop: Given that your 2022 Buick Envision is still very new and likely under factory warranty, your first step should be to contact your Buick dealership. This type of issue is almost certainly covered under warranty, and they have the specialized diagnostic tools and training to accurately pinpoint the problem. Driving with these warnings, especially 'Reduced Engine Power,' can be unsafe and potentially lead to further damage. Avoid extended driving until the issue is resolved.
