Vehicle: 2023 Buick Envision Avenir

Hi all,

I'm having some really strange electrical problems with my 2023 Buick Envision Avenir, which only has about 15,000 miles on it. The main issue is an intermittent battery drain. If the car sits for more than a day or two, the battery is completely dead. I've had to jump it multiple times.

Beyond that, I've noticed some other weird things: the infotainment screen sometimes freezes, the automatic high beams don't always work, and occasionally, a random warning light (like 'Service StabiliTrak') flashes briefly on the dash before disappearing. There's no consistent pattern, and no persistent Check Engine Light.

Could this be a bad battery already, or something more serious like a parasitic draw or a faulty module? It's still under warranty, but I'd like to have some idea before I take it in. Any similar experiences with the Envision?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent electrical gremlins and a consistent battery drain on a relatively new 2023 Buick Envision Avenir are concerning and often point to a parasitic draw or a failing electronic module. Given the vehicle's age and low mileage, it's highly likely to be covered under warranty.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to consider:

  1. Parasitic Draw: This is the most common cause of battery drain. It means something in the vehicle is drawing power even when the car is off. Common culprits include:
    • Aftermarket accessories: Anything added after purchase (dash cams, remote start, etc.) can sometimes cause a draw.
    • Faulty modules: A module (e.g., infotainment, BCM, OnStar) that isn't properly 'going to sleep' can continuously draw power.
    • Stuck relays: A relay that remains energized when it shouldn't can keep a circuit active.
  2. Battery Health: While the car is new, a defective battery is not impossible. Most auto parts stores can perform a free battery load test to determine its health. However, if the battery keeps dying, it's likely a symptom of a draw rather than the battery itself being the root cause.
  3. Alternator Output: Ensure the alternator is charging the battery correctly when the engine is running. A failing alternator won't keep the battery topped up, leading to repeated drains. Most auto parts stores can also test this.
  4. Ground Issues: Loose or corroded ground connections can cause a myriad of intermittent electrical problems, including module malfunctions and strange warning lights.
  5. Module Malfunctions: The flickering warning lights and infotainment issues suggest that one or more electronic control modules might be acting up or experiencing power fluctuations. A diagnostic scan with a professional tool can often reveal 'U' codes (network communication codes) or specific module fault codes.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Since your vehicle is a 2023 model, it is almost certainly under factory warranty. This type of issue should be addressed by a Buick dealership.
  • Parasitic Draw Diagnosis: Diagnosing a parasitic draw can be very time-consuming and requires specialized tools (multimeter, amp clamp) and knowledge. It's best left to professionals.
  • Module Reprogramming/Replacement: If a faulty module is identified, it often requires specialized equipment for replacement and programming, which only a dealership or a highly equipped independent shop can perform.
  • Do not attempt extensive DIY electrical repairs, as this could potentially void your warranty or cause further damage.
