Vehicle: 2023 Buick Envision Preferred

Hello Buick owners,

I recently hit a pretty nasty pothole with the front right wheel of my 2023 Buick Envision Preferred. Since then, I've noticed a slight but consistent pull to the right when I'm driving straight. It's not a violent pull, but I have to keep the steering wheel turned slightly to the left to maintain a straight line.

I'm concerned I might have knocked something out of alignment or damaged a suspension component. The car only has about 15,000 miles on it. Any ideas what could be causing this, and how urgent is it to get it checked out?

Hitting a significant pothole can definitely throw off your vehicle's alignment and potentially damage suspension components, even on a relatively new 2023 Buick Envision. A consistent pull to one side is a clear indicator of an issue. Here are the most likely causes:

  1. Wheel Alignment Issues: This is the most common result of hitting a pothole. The impact can alter the angles (toe, camber, caster) of your wheels, causing the vehicle to pull. An alignment is usually the first step to correct this.
  2. Bent Suspension Component: A hard impact can bend a control arm, tie rod, strut, or even the steering knuckle. Even a slight bend can significantly affect alignment and cause a pull.
  3. Damaged Tire: The pothole could have damaged the internal structure of the tire (e.g., a broken belt), causing it to pull. This might not always be visible externally.
  4. Damaged Wheel Bearing: A severe impact could potentially damage a wheel bearing, leading to excessive play and affecting steering stability.

When to see a shop:

  • Urgency: It is urgent to get this checked. Driving with misaligned wheels or damaged suspension components can lead to:
    • Rapid and uneven tire wear.
    • Compromised handling and safety, especially in emergency maneuvers.
    • Increased strain on other steering and suspension parts, leading to more expensive repairs down the line.
  • Professional Inspection: A qualified technician should perform a comprehensive inspection, which includes:
    • Full Wheel Alignment: This will measure all angles and determine if they are within specifications.
    • Visual Inspection: Checking for any bent or damaged suspension components (control arms, tie rods, struts, steering knuckle).
    • Tire Inspection: Checking for any bulges, sidewall damage, or internal structural issues with the tires.
    • Wheel Bearing Check: Testing for any play in the wheel bearings.

Addressing this promptly will prevent further damage and ensure your Envision drives safely and efficiently.
