Vehicle: 2020 Buick Envision Essence

Hey fellow Buick owners,

I've got a 2020 Buick Envision Essence, and recently, both my ABS and Traction Control warning lights have illuminated on the dashboard. They came on a few days ago and have stayed on since. There haven't been any noticeable changes in braking performance or handling, but it's definitely concerning to see those lights.

I tried turning the car off and on a few times, but the lights persist. I'm wondering if this is a common issue with the Envision or if it points to a specific problem. I've heard it could be anything from a wheel speed sensor to the ABS module itself.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 2020 Envision? What was the fix? Any advice on where to start troubleshooting would be great before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both your ABS and Traction Control (TC) lights illuminate on your 2020 Buick Envision, it typically indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System, as the TC system relies heavily on the ABS sensors and module for its operation. While the car might seem to drive normally, these safety features are likely disabled.

Common Causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, sends an erratic signal, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/TC system loses crucial data, triggering the lights. Common related OBD-II codes include C0035 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), C0040 (Right Front), C0045 (Left Rear), C0050 (Right Rear).
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector: The wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor can become damaged (frayed, cut, or corroded), or the connector might be loose or corroded.
  3. ABS Module Failure: Less common but more serious, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is typically indicated by specific codes related to the module's internal circuits or communication issues (e.g., U0121 - Lost Communication with ABS Control Module).
  4. Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed wheel that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or has debris, it can cause incorrect readings.
  5. Low Brake Fluid: While less common to trigger both lights simultaneously without other symptoms, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes confuse the system.

What to do:

  • Step 1: Scan for Codes: The absolute first step is to use an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS codes (not all basic scanners can) to retrieve any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). This will pinpoint the specific area of the fault.
  • Step 2: Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors: Once you have a code, visually inspect the identified wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any obvious damage, corrosion, or looseness. Check the tone ring as well if visible.
  • Step 3: Check Brake Fluid Level: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is filled to the proper level.

When to see a shop:

Since ABS and Traction Control are critical safety systems, it's highly recommended to have your Envision diagnosed by a professional mechanic, especially if you don't have an advanced OBD-II scanner. They can accurately read the codes, perform specific diagnostic tests on the sensors and wiring, and determine if the ABS module itself is at fault. Driving with these lights on means your vehicle's advanced braking and stability features are inactive, which can be dangerous in emergency braking or slippery conditions.
