Vehicle: 2018 Buick Envision Premium II

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really rough shifting lately in my 2018 Buick Envision Premium II, which has the 2.0L turbo engine. It's most noticeable when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, and sometimes from 3rd to 4th. It feels like a hard jolt, almost like someone bumped me from behind. It's not consistent, but it's happening more frequently now.

Also, there's a noticeable hesitation when accelerating from a stop, almost like the transmission is struggling to engage the right gear. No check engine light yet, but it's definitely concerning. I'm worried about potential long-term damage. Has anyone else with a 2016-2020 Envision experienced similar transmission behavior? What was the fix?

Thanks for any insights!

Hard shifting and hesitation in your 2018 Buick Envision can be indicative of several issues within the transmission or related systems. While a Check Engine Light (CEL) isn't on yet, it's wise to address this promptly.

Common Causes:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Over time, transmission fluid can degrade or become low, leading to poor lubrication and increased friction, causing harsh shifts. Contaminated fluid can also clog internal passages.
  2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software Glitch: Sometimes, a simple software update or reflash of the TCM can resolve erratic shifting patterns.
  3. Faulty Solenoids: The transmission uses solenoids to control fluid flow and gear engagement. A failing solenoid can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
  4. Internal Transmission Wear: While less common in newer vehicles, excessive wear on clutch packs or other internal components can lead to these symptoms.
  5. Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can cause hesitation and shuddering, especially during acceleration.

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: If safe and accessible, check your transmission fluid level and condition. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct procedure and fluid type. If it's dark, smells burnt, or is low, it needs attention.
  2. Scan for Pending Codes: Even without a CEL, a professional scan tool can often pull 'pending' diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that might point to an issue (e.g., P0700 for a general transmission control system malfunction).
  3. Professional Diagnosis: Given the nature of transmission problems, it's highly recommended to take your Envision to a qualified mechanic or Buick dealership as soon as possible. They have specialized diagnostic tools to accurately pinpoint the problem. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly transmission damage.

Early intervention can often prevent minor issues from becoming major repairs.
