Vehicle: 2022 Buick Envision Avenir

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2022 Buick Envision Avenir, and lately, when I turn on the AC or even just the fan, there's a distinct musty, mildew-like smell coming through the vents. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable and unpleasant. The car only has about 25,000 miles on it.

I'm guessing it's probably time to replace the cabin air filter, but I'm also wondering if there's anything else I should be checking or doing to get rid of the smell. Is there a specific type of cabin filter recommended for these cars? Also, how often should the engine air filter be replaced on the Envision?

Any tips on DIY replacement for both filters would be great!

A musty smell from your AC vents is a very common complaint and almost always points to moisture and microbial growth (mold, mildew) within the HVAC system, often on the evaporator core. Your 2022 Buick Envision Avenir, even at 25,000 miles, can certainly develop this issue.

Addressing the Musty Smell & Filter Maintenance:

  1. Cabin Air Filter Replacement: This is your first and most likely culprit. A clogged or dirty cabin air filter can trap moisture and debris, becoming a breeding ground for mold. For your Envision, the cabin air filter is typically located behind the glove box. The replacement process usually involves:
    • Emptying the glove box.
    • Pressing in the sides of the glove box or releasing retaining clips to allow it to drop down.
    • Locating the filter housing cover, unlatching it, and pulling out the old filter.
    • Inserting the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the correct direction (usually down).
    • Reassembling the glove box.
    • Filter Type: Consider an activated charcoal cabin air filter, as these are excellent at absorbing odors in addition to filtering particulates.
  2. Evaporator Core Cleaning: If the smell persists after replacing the cabin filter, the evaporator core itself likely needs cleaning. This is where moisture collects, and mold grows. You can purchase AC evaporator cleaning sprays (often called 'AC refreshers' or 'odor eliminators') that are sprayed into the HVAC system's intake or drain tube. Follow product instructions carefully.
  3. Engine Air Filter: While not related to the AC smell, the engine air filter is crucial for engine performance and longevity. For your 2022 Envision, it's typically recommended to replace the engine air filter every 15,000-30,000 miles or annually, depending on driving conditions. It's usually located in a plastic airbox under the hood and is straightforward to replace.

Preventative Measures:

  • Run Fan Before Shutting Off: A few minutes before reaching your destination, turn off the AC compressor (but leave the fan running) to dry out the evaporator core.
  • Check AC Drain: Ensure the AC drain tube is not clogged, allowing condensation to properly exit the vehicle.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the smell persists after replacing the cabin filter and using an evaporator cleaner.
  • If you suspect a more serious issue, such as a refrigerant leak (though this usually presents with poor cooling, not just smell).
  • There are no specific OBD codes related to a musty AC smell or filter replacement, as these are maintenance items.
