Vehicle: 2023 Buick Envision Avenir

Hi everyone,

I have a 2023 Buick Envision Avenir, and I've noticed that the AC airflow isn't as strong as it used to be, even on the highest setting. It's only got about 15,000 miles on it, so I'm a bit surprised.

Could this be due to a clogged cabin air filter already? Also, what's the recommended interval for changing both the cabin air filter and the engine air filter on these newer Envisions? I want to stay on top of my maintenance.

Hello Chris,

Reduced AC airflow in your 2023 Buick Envision Avenir at 15,000 miles is a very common symptom of a clogged cabin air filter. Here's a look at both your cabin and engine air filters:

Understanding Air Filters:

  1. Cabin Air Filter: Filters the air entering the passenger compartment, removing dust, pollen, and other allergens. A clogged filter restricts airflow from the HVAC system.
  2. Engine Air Filter: Filters the air entering your engine, protecting it from dirt and debris. A clogged engine air filter can reduce engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Recommended Action Steps & Intervals:

  1. Cabin Air Filter Inspection/Replacement:
    • Interval: Buick generally recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000 to 25,000 miles or once a year, especially if you drive in dusty environments or areas with high pollen counts. At 15,000 miles, yours is definitely due for an inspection.
    • Location: On most Envisions, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box and is a relatively easy DIY replacement.
    • Benefits: Replacing it will significantly improve your AC airflow and air quality inside the vehicle.
  2. Engine Air Filter Inspection/Replacement:
    • Interval: The engine air filter typically has a longer interval, usually every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, or as needed based on driving conditions.
    • Location: This filter is usually found in a plastic airbox under the hood and is also a straightforward DIY replacement.
    • Benefits: A clean engine air filter ensures optimal engine performance and fuel economy.

When to See a Shop:

  • If, after replacing the cabin air filter, your AC airflow issues persist, it could indicate a problem with the blower motor, resistor, or even a refrigerant leak. These issues would require professional diagnosis.
  • If you notice any unusual engine noises, reduced power, or a 'Check Engine' light after inspecting or replacing the engine air filter, which could point to an incorrect installation or a separate engine issue. OBD-II codes like P0171 (System Too Lean) or P0174 (System Too Lean Bank 2) can sometimes be triggered by a severely clogged or improperly seated engine air filter, as it affects air-fuel mixture.
