Vehicle: 2023 Buick Envista ST

I just got a new 2023 Buick Envista ST, and after only about 15,000 miles, I'm starting to notice a musty, stale smell coming from the AC vents, especially when I first turn it on. Could this be the cabin air filter already? I thought these were supposed to last longer.

Where is it located in the Envista, and is it an easy DIY replacement? What kind of filter should I get?

Hi Chris,

A musty smell from your AC vents is a common complaint, even on newer vehicles, and the cabin air filter is often the primary culprit. While 15,000 miles might seem early, the environment you drive in (dusty roads, pollen, humidity) can significantly shorten a filter's life.

Causes of Musty Smell:

  1. Clogged Cabin Air Filter: A dirty filter traps moisture, dust, pollen, and other debris, which can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew, leading to that musty odor.
  2. Evaporator Coil: If the filter isn't the sole issue, moisture can accumulate on the evaporator coil (located behind the dashboard), allowing mold and bacteria to grow directly on its surface. This is more common in humid climates or if the AC is frequently shut off without allowing the coil to dry.

Cabin Air Filter (CAF) Details for 2023 Buick Envista:

  • Location: In most Buick models, including the Envista, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. You'll typically need to open the glove box, unclip or remove a few retaining pins/screws, and then lower the glove box to access the filter housing.
  • Replacement Interval: While manufacturer recommendations vary (often 15,000-25,000 miles or annually), it's best to replace it when you notice odors or reduced airflow.
  • Filter Type: You'll need a specific cabin air filter for your 2023 Buick Envista. You can choose a standard particulate filter or an activated charcoal (carbon) filter. Charcoal filters are generally more effective at absorbing odors.

DIY Replacement Steps:

  1. Empty Glove Box: Remove all contents.
  2. Access Filter: Follow your owner's manual or an online guide for your specific Envista model to lower or remove the glove box.
  3. Remove Housing Cover: Unclip the cover for the cabin air filter housing.
  4. Note Airflow Direction: Carefully pull out the old filter, noting the 'airflow' arrow direction.
  5. Install New Filter: Insert the new filter, ensuring the 'airflow' arrow points in the correct direction (usually down towards the floor).
  6. Reassemble: Replace the housing cover and reattach the glove box.

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing the cabin air filter doesn't resolve the musty smell, it's likely mold/mildew on the evaporator coil. A shop can perform an AC system cleaning service, which involves spraying a specialized cleaner directly onto the evaporator to kill mold and remove buildup.
  • If you're uncomfortable performing the DIY replacement.
