2017 Buick LaCrosse - Infotainment Screen Freezing/Blacking Out

Vehicle: 2017 Buick LaCrosse Premium

My 2017 Buick LaCrosse Premium has been having serious issues with its infotainment system. The screen frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive, or just goes completely black while I'm driving. It's not just the radio; navigation and Apple CarPlay also stop working.

Sometimes it reboots itself after a few minutes, but other times it stays black until I turn the car off and on again. There are no warning lights on the dash. I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the power button, but that only helps temporarily.

Is this a known problem with the LaCrosse's IntelliLink system? Could it be a software bug, or is the hardware failing? Any suggestions on what I can do?

Infotainment system issues like freezing and blacking out are unfortunately not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, and your 2017 Buick LaCrosse's IntelliLink system can certainly experience them. These problems are typically rooted in either software glitches or hardware failures.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what you can do:

  1. Software Glitch/Firmware:

    • Outdated Software: The most common cause. Manufacturers frequently release software updates to fix bugs and improve system stability. Your dealership can check if there's a newer firmware version available for your IntelliLink system.
    • Corrupted Software: A rare power surge or interruption could corrupt the system's operating software, leading to instability.
  2. Hardware Failure:

    • Head Unit/Module: The main infotainment control module (often called the head unit) can fail. This is a complex computer that processes all inputs and outputs for the screen, audio, and navigation.
    • Screen Itself: While less likely to cause freezing, a faulty screen can black out. However, if the audio and controls also stop working, it points more to the head unit.
    • Loose Connections: Vibrations over time can loosen electrical connectors behind the dash, leading to intermittent power or data flow to the infotainment system.
  3. Power Supply Issues:

    • An intermittent power supply to the head unit, perhaps due to a faulty fuse, relay, or wiring, could cause reboots or blackouts. Check the relevant fuses in your fuse box (refer to your owner's manual).

What to Do:

  • Check for Updates: Contact your Buick dealership to inquire about any available software updates for your IntelliLink system. This is often the simplest and most effective fix.
  • Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-20 minutes. This can sometimes clear temporary glitches in the system's memory. Reconnect and test.
  • Inspect Fuses: Locate the fuse for the infotainment system (check your owner's manual) and ensure it's not blown or loose.

When to See a Shop: If software updates, a hard reset, and fuse checks don't resolve the issue, it's time to visit a Buick dealership or an automotive electrical specialist. They have diagnostic tools that can read specific fault codes from the infotainment module, which are often not displayed on the dash. This will help them determine if the head unit needs replacement or if there's a deeper wiring issue.
