Vehicle: 2017 Buick LaCrosse Essence

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating problem with my 2017 Buick LaCrosse Essence. For the past few days, I've been getting the 'No Remote Detected' message when I try to start the car, even though the key fob is right there with me. I have to put the fob in the special slot in the center console to get it to start.

Also, the passive entry system (where you just touch the door handle to unlock) has stopped working entirely. I've replaced the battery in the key fob, but that didn't help. Both fobs are acting the same way. Is this a common issue with the LaCrosse, and what could be causing it?

Thanks for any suggestions!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like your 2017 Buick LaCrosse is experiencing issues with its Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) system. Since both key fobs are affected and you've already replaced the battery, the problem likely lies with the vehicle's receiving system rather than the fobs themselves.

Possible Causes:

  1. PEPS Antenna/Receiver Failure: The vehicle has several antennas that detect the key fob's presence for passive entry and starting. If one or more of these antennas or the central receiver module fails, the car won't detect the fob properly.
  2. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring leading to the PEPS antennas or module can disrupt communication.
  3. Interference: While less common for persistent issues, strong electromagnetic interference from external sources (e.g., power lines, certain electronic devices) can sometimes temporarily block the fob signal.
  4. Body Control Module (BCM) Glitch: The BCM often integrates with or communicates with the PEPS system. A software glitch or internal fault in the BCM could cause these symptoms.
  5. Fob Programming Issue: Although you replaced the battery, it's possible the fobs have lost their programming, or there's an issue with the vehicle's programming for the fobs.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for OBD Codes: A diagnostic scan tool capable of reading B-codes (Body codes) might reveal specific codes related to the PEPS system, such as B3105 (Key Fob Battery Low - even if new, could indicate a communication issue) or B3109 (Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Performance).
  2. Inspect for Water Damage: Check areas where PEPS antennas might be located (e.g., under seats, near door handles) for any signs of moisture or corrosion.

When to See a Shop:

Since you've ruled out the key fob batteries and both fobs are failing, this indicates a more complex issue within the vehicle's PEPS system. It's highly recommended to take your LaCrosse to a Buick dealership. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to:

  • Read specific PEPS system fault codes.
  • Test the signal strength and functionality of each PEPS antenna.
  • Check the PEPS receiver module.
  • Reprogram or re-learn the key fobs to the vehicle if necessary.

Attempting to diagnose or repair these components without the proper tools can be difficult and may lead to further issues. A professional diagnosis will accurately identify whether it's an antenna, module, or wiring problem.
