Vehicle: 2017 Buick LaCrosse Premium

Hello forum,

I'm having a very frustrating and intermittent problem with my 2017 Buick LaCrosse Premium. Every now and then, it just won't start. I turn the key, and I get nothing – no crank, just a click, or sometimes just dead silence. The dash lights might flicker, and often, I get a 'Service StabiliTrak' message displayed.

It's not consistent. Sometimes it starts perfectly for days, then suddenly acts up. I've had the battery tested, and it came back good. The terminals are clean and tight. I'm worried it's something more serious than just a battery issue, especially with that StabiliTrak message popping up. Could it be the alternator, or maybe a starter issue? Or something electrical related to the StabiliTrak system itself?

I haven't pulled any specific codes yet, but the 'Service StabiliTrak' message always makes me think it's related to the electrical system. Any ideas on what could be causing this combination of problems?

The combination of intermittent no-start, flickering dash lights, and the 'Service StabiliTrak' message on your 2017 Buick LaCrosse Premium is a classic indicator of a deeper electrical system issue, even if your battery tests 'good' initially. The StabiliTrak system is highly sensitive to voltage fluctuations, so low voltage or intermittent power can trigger its warning.

Here are the most likely causes and recommended steps:

  1. Weak Battery (Despite Test):

    • Cause: A battery can test 'good' under a simple load test but still have insufficient cold cranking amps (CCA) or an intermittent internal short that only manifests under actual starting load. Intermittent issues often point to a battery on the edge.
    • Action: Have the battery re-tested, specifically for CCA, and ensure the test is done when the problem is actively occurring or after the car has sat for a while.
  2. Failing Alternator:

    • Cause: An alternator that isn't consistently charging the battery can lead to low voltage, especially during startup. This can cause the P0562 (System Voltage Low) or P0622 (Generator L-Terminal Circuit) codes.
    • Action: Have the alternator's output tested under load. A failing voltage regulator within the alternator can also cause intermittent charging issues.
  3. Loose or Corroded Battery Cables/Grounds:

    • Cause: Even if terminals look clean, corrosion can hide under the insulation or at the connection points to the chassis or engine block. A loose ground strap can cause intermittent power loss.
    • Action: Visually inspect all battery cables (positive and negative) from end to end, including where they connect to the starter, engine block, and chassis. Wiggle them to check for looseness.
  4. Faulty Starter Solenoid/Starter Motor:

    • Cause: An intermittent starter solenoid or motor can cause a 'click, no crank' situation. However, the StabiliTrak message usually points away from just the starter.
    • Action: If all other electrical checks pass, the starter itself might be the culprit.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM) or Ignition Switch Issues:

    • Cause: Less common, but a faulty BCM or ignition switch could cause intermittent power delivery to critical systems, leading to both starting problems and StabiliTrak warnings.

When to See a Shop: Given the intermittent nature and the 'Service StabiliTrak' message, it's highly recommended to take your LaCrosse to a Buick dealership or a trusted independent mechanic. They can perform a comprehensive electrical system diagnosis, including advanced battery/alternator testing, checking for parasitic draws, and scanning for specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the StabiliTrak system (C-codes) or general electrical issues (P-codes). This will help pinpoint the exact cause and prevent further frustration and potential safety concerns.
