Vehicle: 2019 Buick Regal TourX Essence

Hey everyone,

I'm having an intermittent issue with my 2019 Buick Regal TourX Essence. The ABS and Stabilitrak (traction control) warning lights came on my dashboard a few days ago. Sometimes they stay on for an entire drive, and other times they'll turn off after a few minutes, or even not come on at all for a short trip.

I haven't noticed any immediate issues with braking or handling, but I know these lights mean something isn't right. I tried restarting the car a few times, but it doesn't seem to consistently clear the issue. Has anyone dealt with this on their Regal, and what was the fix?

Intermittent ABS and Stabilitrak warning lights on your 2019 Buick Regal TourX are a common indicator of an issue within the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. These systems are interconnected, so a fault in one often triggers warnings for both. Here are the most frequent causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS): This is by far the most common culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or has a faulty wiring harness, it can send erratic or no signals to the ABS module, causing the lights to illuminate. Common OBD-II codes associated with this include C0035 (Left Front WSS), C0040 (Right Front WSS), C0045 (Left Rear WSS), C0050 (Right Rear WSS).
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector: The wiring leading to the wheel speed sensors can become frayed, corroded, or disconnected, especially in areas exposed to road debris and weather.
  3. ABS Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually indicated by more persistent lights and potentially multiple, unrelated ABS/ESC codes.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger these lights, though usually, a separate brake warning light would also appear.

When to see a shop:

  • Diagnostic Scan: The first step is to have a diagnostic scan performed using an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS codes (not all basic scanners can). The specific code(s) will pinpoint the area of concern.
  • Safety Concern: Although you haven't noticed braking issues, the ABS and Stabilitrak systems are crucial for emergency braking and vehicle stability. Driving with these lights on means these safety features may not function correctly when needed most.
  • Professional Inspection: A technician can accurately diagnose the issue by reading codes, inspecting wheel speed sensors and their wiring, and testing the ABS module if necessary. Timely repair will restore your vehicle's full safety features.
