Vehicle: 2019 Buick Regal TourX Preferred

Hey everyone,

My 2019 Buick Regal TourX Preferred just lit up with both the ABS and Traction Control warning lights on the dash. They came on simultaneously while I was driving normally on the highway. There's no noticeable change in braking feel, but obviously, these lights are concerning.

I tried turning the car off and on again, but they stay illuminated. I haven't had any recent work done on the car. Has anyone experienced this with their Regal TourX? What's the most likely culprit here? I'm hoping it's not an expensive fix.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and Traction Control System (TCS) lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2019 Buick Regal TourX, it almost always indicates an issue within the wheel speed sensor system or the ABS module itself. These systems rely heavily on accurate wheel speed data, so a fault in one often disables both.

Common Causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS): This is the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/TCS module loses critical data, triggering the lights.
  2. Damaged Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring/Connector: The wiring leading to the sensor can get corroded, frayed, or damaged, leading to an intermittent or complete signal loss.
  3. Damaged ABS Tone Ring: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the WSS reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or clogged with debris, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.
  4. Faulty ABS Module: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is typically a more expensive repair.
  5. Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights without a brake warning light, extremely low fluid can sometimes impact system function.

Relevant OBD-II Codes:

When these lights are on, scanning the vehicle with an OBD-II scanner that can read ABS codes (not just generic engine codes) will be crucial. You'll likely find codes in the C00xx range, such as:

  • C0035 - C0050: These ranges typically indicate issues with specific wheel speed sensors (e.g., C0035 for Left Front WSS, C0040 for Right Front WSS, etc.).
  • C0000: Often a generic ABS system fault.
  • C0110: Pump Motor Circuit Malfunction (ABS module related).

When to See a Shop:

While your regular braking might feel normal, the ABS and TCS systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking in an emergency stop, and your traction control won't prevent wheel spin. It's important to have your 2019 Regal TourX diagnosed by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. They can:

  1. Scan the ABS system for specific fault codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of all wheel speed sensors and their wiring.
  3. Test the sensor's output to pinpoint the exact faulty component.
  4. Replace the faulty sensor, wiring, or tone ring, or diagnose a more complex ABS module issue.
