Vehicle: 2021 Buick Regal Sportback Essence

Hey everyone,

My 2021 Buick Regal Sportback Essence, with about 30,000 miles, has started acting up. I'm experiencing really hard shifts, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's getting stuck in a gear. A couple of times, it's gone into 'limp mode' where the engine power is reduced, and the Check Engine Light comes on.

When I scanned it, I got a P0700 code, which is a generic transmission control system malfunction. I know this usually means there are more specific transmission codes stored in the TCM. I'm worried this is a major transmission problem. Has anyone with a newer Regal Sportback experienced similar issues?

What should I be looking for? Is there anything I can check before taking it to a transmission shop?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code on your 2021 Buick Regal Sportback indicates that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault and has illuminated the Check Engine Light. This code itself doesn't specify the problem but confirms that more specific transmission-related codes are stored within the TCM.

Hard shifting and limp mode are classic symptoms of transmission issues. Here's what to consider:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: This is the first and easiest step. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct procedure to check the transmission fluid (some modern transmissions are 'sealed for life' or require specific procedures). Look for proper level, color (should be reddish, not dark brown or black), and smell (burnt smell indicates serious issues).
  2. Scan for Specific TCM Codes: A standard OBD-II scanner will only show P0700. You need a more advanced scan tool (often found at independent shops or dealerships) that can communicate with the TCM to retrieve the specific P07xx codes. These codes will pinpoint the exact nature of the fault, such as solenoid issues, sensor failures (e.g., speed sensors), or internal clutch problems.
  3. Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission and TCM for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. A poor electrical connection can cause intermittent shifting problems.
  4. Transmission Solenoids: Many shifting issues are caused by faulty shift solenoids within the transmission valve body. These solenoids control the flow of fluid to engage different gears. Specific P07xx codes often point directly to a solenoid issue.
  5. Software Updates: Sometimes, transmission performance issues can be resolved with a software update for the TCM. Dealerships can check for and apply these updates.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately, if the car is in limp mode or exhibiting severe hard shifts. Continued driving can cause further, more expensive damage.
  • If you cannot access advanced scan tools to read the specific TCM codes.
  • If the transmission fluid is low, burnt, or discolored, indicating an internal problem.
  • For any internal transmission repairs, solenoid replacements, or software updates, a qualified transmission specialist or dealership is necessary. Transmission work is complex and requires specialized knowledge and tools.
