Vehicle: 2022 Buick Regal Sportback Essence

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system on my 2022 Buick Regal Sportback Essence. Lately, I've been getting a warning message on the dash saying 'Service Blind Spot Monitor System' and the indicator lights in the side mirrors stay illuminated, but the system isn't actually working. It's quite concerning as I rely on this feature.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper sensors, thinking they might be obstructed, but that hasn't helped. The problem seems to be intermittent, sometimes it works fine for a drive, then the warning comes back. There are no visible damages to the bumper or sensors.

Has anyone else experienced this with their newer Buick? Could it be a sensor failure, a wiring issue, or something with the module itself? I scanned it with a basic OBD reader and got a U0232 code, which points to 'Lost Communication with Side Object Detection Module'. Any insights would be great!

It's definitely concerning when safety features like the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system malfunction on your 2022 Buick Regal Sportback Essence. The U0232 code (Lost Communication with Side Object Detection Module) is a critical clue, indicating that the vehicle's main computer isn't able to talk to the module responsible for the BSM system.

Here's what could be happening and what to consider:

  1. Causes for U0232 (Lost Communication):

    • Faulty Side Object Detection Module: The module itself, often located in the rear bumper area, could be internally faulty and unable to communicate.
    • Wiring Harness Issue: A damaged, corroded, or loose wire in the communication (CAN bus) or power supply harness to the module can interrupt communication. This could be intermittent if the connection is partially compromised.
    • Sensor Failure: While the code points to the module, a severely failing sensor could potentially disrupt the module's operation or communication, though less likely to cause a direct U0232.
    • Software Glitch: Less common for a communication code, but a module's software can sometimes freeze or require an update.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps (Limited DIY):

    • Re-inspect Sensors: Even if you've cleaned them, ensure there's no subtle damage or moisture ingress around the sensor housings themselves. Sometimes, internal moisture can cause issues.
    • Check for Recalls/TSBs: Buick may have issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) or recalls related to BSM issues for your model year. A dealership can check this.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Given the U0232 code, this issue is beyond basic DIY troubleshooting. You should take your Regal Sportback to a Buick dealership or a specialized automotive electrical shop. They have advanced diagnostic tools (like GM's GDS2) that can communicate directly with the Side Object Detection Module, check its power and ground, and test the integrity of the CAN bus lines. They can accurately diagnose if it's a module replacement, wiring repair, or a software reflash that's needed. Since it's a 2022 model, it's very likely still under warranty, so a dealership visit is highly recommended.
