Vehicle: 2021 Cadillac CT5-V

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2021 Cadillac CT5-V and recently I've been getting a 'Service Magnetic Ride Control' message pop up on my dash. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently now, especially after hitting a small bump or dip in the road.

When the message appears, the ride quality immediately changes. It feels much stiffer, almost like the suspension is locked up, and it's really uncomfortable. After a while, sometimes it clears itself, and the ride goes back to normal, but then it comes back again.

Has anyone experienced this with their CT5 or other Cadillac models with Mag Ride? What could be causing this? I'm worried about potential damage or a costly repair.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Magnetic Ride Control' message on your 2021 Cadillac CT5-V indicates an issue with the sophisticated adaptive damping system. This system uses magnetorheological fluid to instantly adjust damper stiffness, providing an optimal balance of ride comfort and handling.

Common Causes:

  1. Damper Leakage: Over time, the magnetic fluid can leak from a damper, reducing its effectiveness and triggering a fault.
  2. Sensor Malfunction: Ride height sensors or accelerometers provide input to the Magnetic Ride Control module. A faulty sensor can send incorrect data, leading to system errors.
  3. Wiring or Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or corroded connectors to the dampers or control module can interrupt communication.
  4. Control Module Failure: Less common, but the electronic control module itself could be failing.

Diagnostic Steps & When to See a Shop:

  1. Visual Inspection: Check around each shock absorber for any signs of fluid leaks. Even a small oily residue can indicate a problem.
  2. Check for OBD Codes: A professional scan tool can pull specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the Magnetic Ride Control system. Common codes might include:
    • C0575, C0580, C0585, C0590: These often relate to damper control module communication or circuit issues for specific corners of the vehicle.
    • C0561: Indicates a general system malfunction.
  3. Professional Diagnosis: Due to the complexity of the Magnetic Ride Control system, it's highly recommended to have a Cadillac-certified technician diagnose the issue. They have specialized tools and knowledge to pinpoint the exact cause, whether it's a faulty damper, sensor, or wiring harness.
  4. Do Not Delay: Continuing to drive with a compromised Magnetic Ride Control system can lead to uneven tire wear, reduced handling stability, and a significantly diminished driving experience. Addressing it promptly can prevent further issues.
