Vehicle: 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

Hi all,

I've got a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing with about 15,000 miles. I'm noticing a distinct vibration in the steering wheel, but only when I'm driving at higher speeds, usually above 70 MPH. It's not there at lower speeds, and it doesn't seem to change when I brake.

I recently had the tires rotated and balanced, thinking that was the issue, but it didn't resolve it. The tires are relatively new, and I don't see any obvious bulges or damage. Could this be an alignment issue, or something with the suspension? It's really annoying on long highway drives.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Steering wheel vibration specifically at higher speeds, even after a tire balance, can be frustrating and points to a few potential areas within your vehicle's steering and suspension systems.

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Wheel/Tire Issues (even after balance):
      • Bent Wheel: Even a slight bend in a wheel, especially an inner lip, might not be fully corrected by balancing and can cause vibration at speed.
      • Tire Road Force Variation: A standard dynamic balance might not detect issues with tire uniformity or 'road force.' A shop with a road force balancer can simulate road conditions to find subtle imbalances or internal tire defects.
      • Uneven Tire Wear: While tires are new, uneven wear from a previous alignment issue can sometimes cause vibration.
    • Alignment Issues: While less likely to cause only vibration without pulling, a misaligned front end can sometimes contribute to high-speed instability and vibration.
    • Worn Suspension Components:
      • Ball Joints/Tie Rod Ends: Worn steering or suspension joints can introduce play, leading to vibration.
      • Control Arm Bushings: Deteriorated bushings can allow excessive movement.
      • Wheel Bearings: A failing wheel bearing can cause humming and vibration, often increasing with speed.
    • Driveshaft/Axle Issues: On a rear-wheel-drive performance car like the Blackwing, an imbalance in the driveshaft or a worn CV joint (if applicable) could cause high-speed vibration, though this usually feels more like a general vehicle vibration rather than just steering wheel.
  2. Recommended Actions:

    • Road Force Balance: Request a road force balance at a reputable tire shop.
    • Thorough Suspension Inspection: Have a mechanic inspect all front suspension and steering components for play or wear.
    • Wheel Inspection: Have the wheels inspected for bends or damage.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should have this investigated soon. While it might seem minor, sustained vibration can accelerate wear on other components, including tires, wheel bearings, and steering linkages. More importantly, it can indicate a safety issue if a component is excessively worn. A professional can accurately diagnose the source of the vibration.
