Vehicle: 2023 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

Hi everyone,

I've got a Check Engine Light (CEL) on my 2023 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. I used my OBD-II scanner, and it's throwing a P0133 code: 'O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)'. The car seems to be running fine, no noticeable loss of power or strange noises, but the light is definitely on.

Could this be a faulty O2 sensor, or is there something else I should be looking at? I know Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor on the passenger side. Is it common for these to go out so early on a newer car? I'm hoping it's not something more serious.

Any advice on troubleshooting this or what to expect would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0133 code, 'O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1),' indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is detecting that the upstream oxygen sensor on the passenger side (Bank 1 Sensor 1) is not switching as quickly as expected between rich and lean conditions. This is a common electrical and electronics issue related to engine management.

  1. Faulty O2 Sensor: The most direct cause is a failing oxygen sensor itself. Over time, O2 sensors can become contaminated or simply wear out, leading to a slower response time. While less common on a 2023 model, it's not impossible, especially if there's been fuel contamination or other engine issues.
  2. Wiring/Connector Issues: Inspect the wiring harness and connector for Bank 1 Sensor 1. Look for any signs of damage, fraying, corrosion, or loose connections. A poor electrical connection can impede the sensor's signal transmission, making it appear slow.
  3. Exhaust Leaks: An exhaust leak near the O2 sensor can allow unmetered air to enter the exhaust stream, skewing the sensor's readings and potentially causing a slow response code. Listen for any hissing or puffing sounds from the exhaust.
  4. Fuel System Issues: While less direct, issues like a rich or lean running condition (e.g., faulty fuel injector, vacuum leak, low fuel pressure) can cause the O2 sensor to react slowly because it's constantly trying to compensate for an incorrect air/fuel mixture. However, these usually trigger additional fuel trim codes.
  5. ECM/PCM Fault: Extremely rare, but a fault within the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could misinterpret the O2 sensor's signal. This is typically a last resort diagnosis.

When to See a Shop:

While the car may seem to run fine, a slow O2 sensor can negatively impact fuel economy and emissions over time. It's recommended to have your 2023 CT5-V Blackwing inspected by a Cadillac dealership or a reputable performance shop. They can:

  • Verify the P0133 code and check for any pending or related codes.
  • Monitor live O2 sensor data using a professional scan tool to observe its switching patterns and compare it to specifications.
  • Perform voltage and resistance checks on the O2 sensor circuit.
  • Inspect for exhaust leaks.

Replacing the O2 sensor is a common fix for this code, but proper diagnosis ensures you're not replacing a good part due to an underlying issue.
