Vehicle: 2021 Cadillac CT5 Luxury

Hey everyone,

My 2021 Cadillac CT5 Luxury with the 2.0L Turbo engine has been feeling sluggish lately. I've noticed a significant lack of power, especially when accelerating onto the highway or trying to pass. It feels like the turbo isn't kicking in properly. The car just doesn't have its usual pep.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0299 code, which I understand means 'turbocharger/supercharger underboost'. Has anyone else experienced this with their CT5 2.0T? What was the cause and fix?

The car has about 40,000 miles on it, and I'm hoping it's not a major turbo replacement.

A P0299 code indicating 'turbocharger/supercharger underboost' on your 2021 Cadillac CT5 2.0T is a common issue that points to the engine not achieving the commanded boost pressure. This directly translates to the lack of power you're experiencing. While a full turbo replacement is a possibility, often the issue lies with components controlling the turbo.

Common Causes:

  1. Wastegate Actuator Issues: The wastegate actuator controls the exhaust gas flow to the turbo. If it's stuck open, faulty, or its vacuum lines are compromised, the turbo won't build sufficient boost.
  2. Boost Leak: Leaks in the intercooler piping, charge pipes, or vacuum lines can cause a loss of boost pressure.
  3. Diverter Valve/Bypass Valve Failure: This valve releases excess boost pressure when not needed. If it's stuck open or leaking, boost will escape.
  4. Turbocharger Failure: While less common than control issues, the turbocharger itself can fail (e.g., worn bearings, damaged compressor/turbine wheels).
  5. Clogged Catalytic Converter: A restricted exhaust can prevent the turbo from spooling correctly, though this usually comes with other codes.

Troubleshooting Steps (Limited for owner):

  1. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious loose or cracked hoses around the turbocharger and intercooler piping.
  2. Listen for Hissing: A distinct hissing sound under acceleration could indicate a boost leak.

When to See a Shop: It's crucial to have your CT5 diagnosed by a qualified technician or Cadillac dealership. They have specialized tools and knowledge to accurately diagnose turbo system issues. They will typically:

  • Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan to check for other related codes and live data (e.g., actual vs. commanded boost pressure).
  • Conduct a smoke test to identify boost leaks in the intake system.
  • Inspect the wastegate actuator, its linkage, and vacuum lines for proper operation.
  • Test the diverter valve.
  • If necessary, physically inspect the turbocharger for damage. Addressing this promptly will restore your vehicle's performance and prevent potential long-term damage to the engine or turbocharger.
