2021 CT5 No-Start Issue - Cranks but Won't Catch

Vehicle: 2021 Cadillac CT5 Premium Luxury

My 2021 Cadillac CT5 Premium Luxury suddenly won't start this morning. It cranks strongly, so I don't think it's the battery, but it just won't turn over and catch. No Check Engine Light is on, and I haven't noticed any weird warning messages on the dash.

I tried both key fobs, thinking it might be a security system issue, but no luck. Fuel tank is about half full. It was running perfectly fine yesterday. Any ideas what could be causing this? Is there a common relay or sensor that fails on these newer CT5s?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'cranks but no start' condition on your 2021 Cadillac CT5 Premium Luxury typically points to a lack of one of the three essentials for combustion: fuel, spark, or compression. Since it's cranking strongly, the battery and starter are likely okay.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Fuel Delivery Issues:
    • Fuel Pump: The fuel pump might not be priming or delivering fuel pressure. Listen for a faint hum from the rear of the car when you first open the driver's door or press the start button (without pressing the brake). If you don't hear it, the pump or its relay could be faulty.
    • Fuel Filter: While less common on newer vehicles, a severely clogged fuel filter could restrict flow.
    • Fuel Pressure Sensor: A faulty sensor could be giving incorrect readings to the ECU.
  2. Ignition System Problems (Spark):
    • Ignition Coils/Spark Plugs: While unlikely to fail all at once, a widespread ignition issue could prevent starting. However, this usually triggers misfire codes.
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor: This sensor tells the ECU when to fire the spark plugs and injectors. If it's faulty, the ECU won't know when to initiate combustion. This often doesn't throw a CEL immediately but can prevent starting.
  3. Security System (Immobilizer): Even if you tried both fobs, there could be an issue with the vehicle's immobilizer system not recognizing the key or having an internal fault, preventing the engine from starting. Look for a security light on the dash that stays illuminated or flashes rapidly.
  4. Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Wiring: In rare cases, a problem with the ECU itself or its wiring harness could prevent proper engine management.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you cannot hear the fuel pump prime or confirm fuel pressure.
  • If you suspect a crankshaft position sensor issue or a security system fault, as these often require specialized diagnostic tools.
  • If basic checks yield no results, a professional can perform a full diagnostic scan for pending codes and check live data for fuel pressure, spark timing, and sensor readings.
