Vehicle: 2017 Cadillac CT6 Luxury

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really rough shifting in my 2017 Cadillac CT6 Luxury with the 3.6L V6 engine. It's most noticeable when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds, especially between 1st and 3rd gear. Sometimes it feels like the transmission is hesitating before engaging, almost like a lurch.

The car has about 75,000 miles on it, and I've kept up with all the scheduled maintenance. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash yet, but the feeling is definitely getting worse. It's making city driving quite unpleasant.

Has anyone else with a CT6, especially this model year, run into similar transmission problems? I'm trying to figure out if this is a common issue or something more specific to my vehicle before I take it to the dealer. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Rough shifting and hesitation in your 2017 Cadillac CT6's 8-speed automatic transmission can be indicative of several issues, ranging from minor to more significant. Given the mileage, it's important to address this promptly.

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even without a check engine light, a pending code might be present. A professional scan tool can reveal codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific codes related to shift solenoids (e.g., P0751, P0756) or torque converter clutch issues (e.g., P0741).

  2. Possible Causes:

    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: The most common culprit. Low fluid levels can cause pressure issues, leading to hard shifts or slipping. Contaminated fluid can reduce lubrication and affect solenoid operation. Cadillac recommends specific transmission fluid (Dexron VI).
    • Faulty Shift Solenoids: These electronic components control fluid flow to engage gears. If a solenoid is sticking or failing, it can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
    • Valve Body Issues: The valve body directs transmission fluid to the clutches and bands. Wear or blockages can disrupt proper shifting.
    • Torque Converter Problems: A failing torque converter can cause shuddering, slipping, or delayed engagement.
    • Software Glitch: Sometimes, a transmission control module (TCM) software update can resolve shifting anomalies.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: If you notice any new warning lights, hear unusual noises (whining, grinding), or experience complete loss of a gear. Continued driving with severe transmission issues can lead to more extensive and costly damage.
    • Soon: If the symptoms are consistent and worsening, as you describe. A qualified Cadillac technician can perform a thorough diagnostic, including checking fluid levels and condition, scanning for codes, and potentially performing a road test to pinpoint the exact cause. They can also check for any relevant technical service bulletins (TSBs) for your specific model year.
