Vehicle: 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum

Hello Cadillac owners,

I own a 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum with the 3.0L Twin Turbo engine, and it has about 60,000 miles on it. Recently, I've noticed the engine temperature gauge creeping up a bit higher than usual, especially when I'm stuck in traffic or driving uphill. It hasn't redlined, but it's definitely warmer than I'm comfortable with.

I checked the coolant reservoir, and the level seems okay, but I'm not sure when the coolant was last changed. Could this be a sign that I need a coolant flush? What's the recommended interval for a coolant flush on these CT6s, especially with the twin-turbo engine? Any other common causes for this issue I should look into? Thanks for the help!

An engine running hotter than usual in your 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum with the 3.0L Twin Turbo engine at 60,000 miles warrants immediate attention. A coolant flush is a good starting point, but other factors could be at play.

  1. Common Causes of Overheating/High Temps:
    • Degraded Coolant: Over time, coolant loses its anti-corrosion properties and heat transfer efficiency. Old coolant can also lead to sediment buildup.
    • Low Coolant Level: Even if the reservoir looks okay, the radiator or other parts of the system might be low.
    • Thermostat Issues: A stuck or failing thermostat can prevent coolant from circulating properly.
    • Radiator/Condenser Blockage: External debris (leaves, bugs) can block airflow, or internal corrosion can restrict flow.
    • Water Pump Failure: A failing water pump won't circulate coolant effectively.
    • Cooling Fan Issues: Malfunctioning cooling fans (especially in traffic) can cause temperatures to rise.
  2. Coolant Flush Interval: For your 2017 CT6, Cadillac generally recommends a coolant flush and fill every 5 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, using Dex-Cool extended-life coolant. At 60,000 miles, you're well within the mileage, but if it's been 5 years since the last change, or if the coolant appears discolored or sludgy, a flush is advisable.
  3. Coolant Type: Always use Dex-Cool (Orange) extended-life coolant. Mixing different types of coolant can lead to chemical reactions that form sludge and damage the cooling system.
  4. DIY vs. Professional: While a basic drain and fill can be done by a DIYer, a proper flush involves specialized equipment to ensure all old coolant is removed and the system is free of air pockets. Given the complexity of modern cooling systems, especially with a twin-turbo engine, a professional service is recommended to ensure thoroughness and proper bleeding.

When to See a Shop: If the temperature gauge continues to rise, if you notice any coolant leaks, hear unusual noises (like a failing water pump), or if the 'Check Engine' light illuminates (possibly with codes like P0128 - Coolant Thermostat Rationality), take your CT6 to a certified Cadillac service center immediately. Driving with an overheating engine can cause severe and irreversible damage.
