Vehicle: 2019 Cadillac CT6 Premium Luxury

Hi all,

I've been noticing some really rough and clunky shifts in my 2019 Cadillac CT6 Premium Luxury, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds. It's equipped with the 10-speed automatic transmission.

The shifts between 1st and 2nd, and sometimes 2nd and 3rd gear, feel particularly harsh, almost like a jolt. It's not consistent, but it happens frequently enough to be concerning. My car has about 45,000 miles on it.

Is this a known issue with the 10-speed in the CT6? I'm worried about potential long-term damage. Should I be looking into a transmission fluid flush or is this something more serious? Any advice on what to tell the service department would be helpful.

Rough shifting in modern automatic transmissions, especially multi-speed units like the 10-speed in your 2019 Cadillac CT6, can be concerning. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Adaptive Learning: Many modern transmissions have adaptive learning capabilities. The transmission control module (TCM) learns your driving style and adjusts shift points accordingly. Sometimes, a reset of this adaptive learning can resolve minor shift quality issues. This is typically done by a dealer or a shop with advanced diagnostic tools.
  2. Transmission Fluid: While 45,000 miles might seem early for a fluid change, the condition and level of the transmission fluid are critical. Low fluid or degraded fluid can lead to harsh shifts. A professional can check the fluid level and condition. Note: Many modern transmissions are 'sealed for life' or have extended service intervals, but fluid can still degrade under severe conditions.
  3. Software Updates/TSBs: Cadillac may have released Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for the TCM to address specific shift quality concerns in the 10-speed transmission. Your dealer can check for these.
  4. Solenoid or Valve Body Issues: Internal transmission components like shift solenoids or the valve body can cause erratic shifting if they are sticking or failing. These components control the flow of transmission fluid to engage gears.
  5. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even without a check engine light, the TCM might have stored codes related to shift performance. A common generic code for transmission issues is P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), which indicates the TCM has detected a fault and illuminated the MIL. More specific codes (e.g., P0731 for incorrect 1st gear ratio) might also be present.

When to See a Shop: Given the persistent nature of the rough shifts, it's highly recommended to have your CT6 inspected by a qualified technician or a Cadillac dealership. They can perform a diagnostic scan for codes, check fluid levels, and determine if a software update, adaptive learning reset, or more in-depth transmission repair is needed. Early diagnosis can prevent more significant and costly transmission damage.
