Vehicle: 2016 Cadillac CTS-V

Hey guys, I'm having some serious transmission issues with my 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. Lately, it's been shifting really hard, especially from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It feels like a jolt, sometimes even at light throttle. The Check Engine Light came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0700 code.

I know P0700 is a generic transmission control system malfunction, meaning there are more specific codes stored in the TCM. I haven't noticed any fluid leaks, and the fluid level seems fine. The car has about 70,000 miles on it. Is this a common problem for these 8-speed automatics, or am I looking at something major here?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The P0700 code on your 2016 Cadillac CTS-V indicates that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault and has illuminated the Check Engine Light. As you correctly noted, this is a generic code, and more specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) will be stored within the TCM itself.

Hard shifting, especially between lower gears, is a common symptom of several transmission-related problems. Here's what's likely happening and what to investigate:

  1. Specific TCM Codes:

    • Cause: The P0700 is just a flag. A more advanced scan tool (often dealer-level or professional aftermarket) is needed to read the actual Pxxxx codes from the TCM. These could be related to solenoid performance, pressure control, sensor readings, or internal clutch issues.
    • Action: The absolute first step is to get the specific TCM codes read. Without them, diagnosis is largely guesswork.
  2. Transmission Fluid Condition & Level:

    • Cause: While you checked the level, the condition of the fluid is also critical. Old, burnt, or contaminated fluid can lead to poor shifting performance and internal wear. Low fluid can also cause issues.
    • Action: Have a shop inspect the transmission fluid for color, smell, and presence of metal particles. If the fluid is dark or smells burnt, a fluid and filter change might be beneficial, but it could also indicate internal wear.
  3. Solenoid Issues:

    • Cause: The 8L90 transmission in your CTS-V uses solenoids to control fluid flow and engage gears. A failing or sticking shift solenoid or pressure control solenoid can cause harsh shifts or delay engagement.
    • Action: Specific TCM codes will often point to a particular solenoid. Replacement of individual solenoids is possible, but often requires dropping the transmission pan and valve body access.
  4. Valve Body Problems:

    • Cause: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Wear or blockages within the valve body can lead to erratic shifting, pressure issues, and P0700-related codes.
    • Action: This is a more complex repair, often involving valve body replacement or overhaul, which is best left to transmission specialists.

When to see a shop: Given the P0700 code and significant hard shifting, it is imperative to take your 2016 Cadillac CTS-V to a qualified transmission specialist or a Cadillac dealership immediately. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause further damage to the transmission, potentially leading to a more expensive repair or even complete transmission failure. They will be able to read the specific TCM codes, perform diagnostic tests, and recommend the appropriate repair.
