Vehicle: 2020 Cadillac Escalade Premium Luxury

I'm having an issue with the Side Blind Zone Alert system in my 2020 Cadillac Escalade Premium Luxury. The 'Service Side Blind Zone Alert' message keeps popping up on the dash, and the system simply isn't working. The little amber lights in the mirrors don't illuminate when a car is in my blind spot.

It started intermittently, but now it seems to be a constant problem. I've checked the settings in the infotainment system, and it's definitely turned on. Could this be a sensor issue, or maybe something with the wiring? Has anyone else experienced this with their Escalade, and what was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Side Blind Zone Alert' message in your 2020 Cadillac Escalade indicates a fault within the system designed to detect vehicles in your blind spots. This system relies on radar sensors typically located behind the rear bumper fascia.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic approaches:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Damage: The radar sensors can be obstructed by dirt, ice, or snow. Less commonly, a minor impact or even a car wash with high-pressure spray can damage or misalign them. Visually inspect the rear bumper area where the sensors are located for any obvious damage or debris.
  2. Wiring Issues: The wiring harness connecting the sensors to the control module can become damaged, corroded, or disconnected. This is more common in areas exposed to road salt and moisture.
  3. Faulty Sensor: One or both of the radar sensors themselves could be failing internally. These are electronic components and can degrade over time.
  4. Control Module Failure: The Side Blind Zone Alert control module (sometimes integrated into another module) could be faulty, though this is less common than sensor or wiring issues.

OBD Codes to Look For:

When this system malfunctions, it will almost certainly store specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the vehicle's computer system. Common codes related to blind spot monitoring include:

  • U0151: Lost Communication with Sensing and Diagnostic Module (or a similar module name).
  • B-codes: Specific B-codes (e.g., B0081, B0082) related to the left or right side object detection sensor performance or circuit faults.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Action: Since this is a safety feature, it's advisable to have it checked promptly.
  • Professional Diagnosis: A Cadillac dealership or a reputable independent shop with advanced diagnostic tools can read the specific B-codes or U-codes. These codes will directly point to the faulty sensor, wiring issue, or module problem. They can also perform sensor calibration if a sensor has been replaced or misaligned.
