Vehicle: 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV

Hello Cadillac community,

I'm having some concerning issues with my 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 6.2L V8. Lately, it's been taking longer to start, sometimes cranking for several seconds before finally catching. On two occasions, it has actually stalled shortly after starting, which is quite alarming.

There's no check engine light on right now, but the hard starts are becoming more frequent. The vehicle has about 45,000 miles on it. When it does run, it seems fine, but the starting issue is making me nervous about reliability.

Could this be a fuel pump problem, or something else related to the fuel delivery system? Has anyone with a newer Escalade experienced similar symptoms? Any insights or diagnostic tips would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment. Thanks in advance!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hard starts and occasional stalling in your 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV 6.2L V8 are classic symptoms of a problem within the fuel delivery system. Even without a check engine light, there could be pending codes or an intermittent issue that hasn't triggered a hard fault yet.

  1. Potential Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While not currently illuminated, a professional scan might reveal codes related to fuel pressure, such as P0087 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low) or P0088 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High). Other codes might relate to fuel pump control or injector issues.

  2. Common Causes:

    • Failing Fuel Pump: This is a primary suspect. A weak fuel pump may not be able to build sufficient pressure quickly enough, leading to hard starts. If it's intermittently failing, it could cause stalling.
    • Clogged Fuel Filter: While modern vehicles often have long-life fuel filters, a severely clogged one can restrict fuel flow, especially during startup when maximum pressure is needed.
    • Faulty Fuel Pressure Regulator: This component maintains consistent fuel pressure. If it's failing, pressure could be too low or too high, affecting engine starting and running.
    • Leaking Fuel Injectors: If one or more injectors are leaking, fuel pressure can drop when the engine is off, requiring longer cranking to build pressure back up.
    • Ignition System Issues: Less likely if it runs fine once started, but weak spark plugs or coils could contribute to hard starts.
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor: A failing sensor can send incorrect signals to the engine computer, affecting ignition timing and fuel delivery during startup.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: If the stalling becomes more frequent, or if you experience any loss of power while driving. A sudden stall at speed can be dangerous.
    • Soon: Given the intermittent nature and the potential for it to worsen, it's advisable to have your Escalade inspected by a qualified technician. They can perform a fuel pressure test, check for leaks, and scan for any hidden codes to accurately diagnose the problem before it leads to a breakdown.
