Vehicle: 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV

Hey ClearTheCode community,

I've got a 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV with the 6.2L V8, and it's got about 55,000 miles on it. Recently, I've started hearing a distinct squealing noise from the engine bay, especially when I first start it up in the morning or when it's damp outside. It sometimes goes away after a few minutes, but it's getting more frequent.

I'm suspecting it might be the serpentine belt. Is this a common issue for Escalades around this mileage? What should I look for to confirm it's the belt, and is this a DIY job or something best left to the dealership?

Thanks for any insights!

Hi David,

A squealing noise from your 2020 Cadillac Escalade's engine bay, especially on startup or in damp conditions, is a very strong indicator of a worn or loose serpentine belt. At 55,000 miles, it's certainly within the typical lifespan where a belt might start showing signs of wear.

Causes of Serpentine Belt Squeal:

  1. Worn Belt: The rubber can harden, crack, or become glazed over time, losing its grip on the pulleys.
  2. Loose Belt: The automatic tensioner might be failing, or the belt could simply be stretched.
  3. Misaligned Pulleys: Less common, but a misaligned pulley can cause friction and noise.
  4. Failing Accessory Pulley Bearing: A failing bearing in an alternator, power steering pump, or idler pulley can also cause squealing, which might be mistaken for a belt issue.

How to Confirm it's the Belt:

  • Visual Inspection: With the engine off and cold, inspect the entire length of the serpentine belt. Look for:
    • Cracks or fraying along the ribs.
    • Glazing (a shiny, smooth appearance) on the ribbed side.
    • Missing chunks of rubber.
  • Belt Tension: While the Escalade uses an automatic tensioner, you can visually check if the tensioner arm is moving freely and maintaining adequate tension.
  • Water Spray Test (Caution!): Briefly and carefully spray a small amount of water onto the ribbed side of the belt while the engine is running and squealing. If the noise temporarily stops or changes, it confirms the belt is the culprit. Be extremely careful around moving engine parts.

DIY vs. Shop:

  • DIY Feasibility: Replacing the serpentine belt on a 2020 Escalade is generally considered a moderate DIY job. You'll need a serpentine belt tool (or a long breaker bar/ratchet) to release the tensioner, and possibly a diagram of the belt routing. Ensure you have the correct replacement belt for your specific engine.
  • When to See a Shop:
    • If you're uncomfortable working around the engine or lack the necessary tools.
    • If, after replacing the belt, the squealing persists. This could indicate a failing tensioner or an accessory pulley bearing, which requires further diagnosis and potentially more complex repairs.

Replacing the belt proactively can prevent it from breaking, which would leave you stranded and without power steering, alternator, and potentially AC.
