Vehicle: 2023 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing

Hello fellow Blackwing owners,

I've got a 2023 CT4-V Blackwing, and it's been an absolute dream until recently. I've noticed that the steering feels a bit loose, almost like there's excessive play in the wheel. It's not as precise or direct as it used to be, and I find myself making small corrections more often, especially at highway speeds.

It's subtle, but definitely noticeable for a car that's supposed to be razor-sharp. I've only got about 15,000 miles on it. Could something already be worn out? Has anyone else experienced this with their CT4-V or similar performance Cadillac?

Any thoughts on what might be causing this would be great!

It's concerning to hear your 2023 CT4-V Blackwing's steering feels loose, especially given its performance pedigree and low mileage. A precise steering feel is crucial for a vehicle like yours. Here are the common culprits for excessive steering play or a loose feeling:

  1. Tie Rod Ends (Inner or Outer):

    • Cause: These components connect the steering rack to the steering knuckle. Worn ball joints within the tie rod ends can create play, leading to a less direct steering feel and requiring more corrections.
    • Inspection: A technician can lift the vehicle and check for play by wiggling the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
  2. Ball Joints (Upper or Lower):

    • Cause: Ball joints connect the control arms to the steering knuckle. Worn ball joints can introduce play in the suspension, which translates to a loose steering feel and potentially clunking noises over bumps.
    • Inspection: Similar to tie rods, checking for play when the wheel is moved vertically (12 and 6 o'clock positions) can reveal issues.
  3. Control Arm Bushings:

    • Cause: These rubber or polyurethane bushings isolate the control arms from the chassis. Worn or deteriorated bushings can allow excessive movement of the control arms, affecting alignment and steering precision.
  4. Steering Rack/Gearbox:

    • Cause: While less common at low mileage, internal wear or looseness within the steering rack itself can cause play. This could also be related to the electronic power steering (EPS) system.
  5. Wheel Bearings:

    • Cause: A severely worn wheel bearing can cause play, but it's usually accompanied by a humming or grinding noise that increases with speed.
  6. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): For mechanical steering play, you typically won't see OBD codes. If there's an issue with the electronic power steering system, codes like U0420 (Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module) or C0561 (System Voltage Malfunction) might appear, but these usually indicate a system fault rather than mechanical play.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Any issue affecting steering precision should be addressed promptly. It impacts vehicle control and safety.
  • Recommendation: Take your Blackwing to a Cadillac dealership or a reputable performance shop. They can perform a thorough inspection of all steering and suspension components. Given the car's performance nature, precise diagnosis and repair are crucial to restore its intended handling characteristics.
