Vehicle: 2023 Cadillac Lyriq RWD

Hi Lyriq owners,

I'm having a frustrating issue with the charging port on my 2023 Cadillac Lyriq RWD. Sometimes, when I plug in the charging cable (both Level 2 and DC Fast Charge), it doesn't latch securely. I have to wiggle it around a bit, and even then, sometimes it releases unexpectedly during charging.

I've also noticed that occasionally the car's display will show a 'charging fault' message, even if the cable seems to be connected. I've tried different charging stations and cables, and the problem seems to be with the car's port itself.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Lyriq? Is this a known issue, or could it be a software glitch that needs an update? It's making charging quite unreliable.

Issues with charging port reliability on electric vehicles like your 2023 Cadillac Lyriq RWD can be a significant concern, as it directly impacts the usability of the vehicle. This problem could stem from a few different areas:

  1. Latching Mechanism Failure: The physical latching mechanism within the charging port itself might be faulty or damaged. This could be due to a manufacturing defect, wear and tear, or even minor physical impact. If the latch isn't engaging properly, the cable won't seat securely, leading to intermittent connections or disconnections.
  2. Charging Port Sensor Issues: The Lyriq's charging system uses sensors to detect when a cable is properly inserted and latched. If these sensors are dirty, misaligned, or faulty, the car's system might not register a secure connection, leading to 'charging fault' messages even if the physical connection seems okay.
  3. Software Glitches: As with many advanced EV systems, software plays a crucial role. A software bug in the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) or other related control units could be misinterpreting charging port status or causing the latch to malfunction. Cadillac may have released over-the-air (OTA) updates or dealer-installed updates to address such issues.
  4. Wiring or Connector Issues: Less commonly, there could be an internal wiring issue or a loose connector within the charging port assembly that's causing intermittent contact.
  5. Diagnostic Codes: The vehicle's system will likely have stored specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), often 'B' codes (Body codes) or 'P' codes related to the charging system, that can pinpoint the exact nature of the fault.

When to See a Shop: Given that this is a critical function of an EV and could be a safety concern, you should schedule an appointment with a Cadillac dealership immediately. They have specialized EV diagnostic tools to read specific charging system codes, inspect the physical charging port, and check for any relevant software updates. Do not attempt to force the charger or modify the port yourself, as this could void warranties or cause further damage.
