Vehicle: 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport (2.0L Turbo) that just started. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard. I used my OBD-II scanner, and it's showing a P0500 code, which points to a 'Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction'.

The car seems to drive okay, but I'm concerned about safety, especially with winter coming up. I've heard that wheel speed sensors are a common failure point. Could this be the case, or is there something more serious going on with the ABS module itself?

Has anyone dealt with this on their XT4 or a similar Cadillac? Any advice on diagnosing which sensor might be bad or if it's something else entirely would be great. Thanks!

The simultaneous illumination of your ABS and Traction Control lights, along with a P0500 code (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction), strongly indicates an issue within your vehicle's wheel speed sensor system on your 2019 Cadillac XT4. The ABS and Traction Control systems rely heavily on accurate wheel speed data, so a fault in this area will disable both.

Here are the most common causes for a P0500 code and related symptoms:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS): This is the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. These sensors can fail due to internal electrical issues, damage from road debris, or corrosion in the wiring harness.
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector: The wiring harness connecting the WSS to the ABS module can become frayed, corroded, or disconnected. A loose or dirty connector can also interrupt the signal.
  3. Damaged ABS Tone Ring/Reluctor Wheel: The WSS reads the teeth on a tone ring (also called a reluctor wheel) usually located on the axle shaft or wheel hub. If this ring is cracked, bent, or clogged with debris, the sensor won't get an accurate reading.
  4. Faulty ABS Control Module: While less common than a sensor or wiring issue, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is typically a more expensive repair.

What to do:

  • Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the wiring and connectors for each wheel speed sensor. Look for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Also, check around the wheel hubs for any visible damage to the tone rings.
  • Check for Specific Wheel Sensor Codes: While P0500 is a generic VSS code, a more advanced OBD-II scanner (or a dealership-level scanner) can often pull specific codes like C0035 (Left Front WSS), C0040 (Right Front WSS), etc., which would pinpoint the exact sensor at fault.

When to see a shop:

If a visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious issue, or if you don't have access to an advanced scanner, it's best to take your XT4 to a qualified mechanic or Cadillac dealership. They can:

  • Use a specialized scan tool to read live data from each wheel speed sensor, identifying which one is reporting an incorrect or no signal.
  • Perform continuity tests on the wiring harness.
  • Thoroughly inspect the tone rings and wheel bearings (as a faulty wheel bearing can sometimes damage the tone ring or sensor).

Addressing this issue promptly is important for your safety, as the ABS and Traction Control systems are crucial for maintaining control during braking and in slippery conditions.
