Vehicle: 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out about an issue with my 2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport, equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine. I recently noticed a small puddle of reddish fluid under the front of the car, which I suspect is transmission fluid. On top of that, I've started experiencing a slight delay when shifting into drive or reverse, and sometimes the shifts feel a bit rougher than usual.

The car has about 55,000 miles on it. There's no check engine light or transmission warning light on the dash yet, but the fluid leak and the delayed engagement are definitely concerning me. I'm worried about potential damage to the transmission.

Has anyone with an XT4 experienced a transmission fluid leak or similar shifting issues? What could be the common culprits for a leak and delayed engagement on this model? Any advice on what to look for or what questions to ask the mechanic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A reddish fluid leak under your 2019 Cadillac XT4, combined with delayed engagement and rougher shifts, is a strong indicator of a transmission fluid leak and potentially low fluid levels. This needs immediate attention to prevent severe transmission damage.

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even without a dashboard light, a professional scan tool might reveal pending codes related to transmission performance, such as P0741 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance - Stuck Off) or P0776 (Pressure Control Solenoid 'B' Performance - Stuck Off), which can be triggered by low fluid pressure.

  2. Common Causes for Leaks and Shifting Issues:

    • Transmission Pan Gasket: This is the most common source of leaks. Over time, the gasket can dry out, crack, or become loose, allowing fluid to seep out.
    • Output Shaft Seals/Axle Seals: Leaks can occur where the drive shafts connect to the transmission, especially if the seals are worn or damaged.
    • Transmission Cooler Lines: These lines carry fluid to and from the transmission cooler. They can corrode, crack, or have loose fittings, leading to leaks.
    • Torque Converter Seal: A leak from the front of the transmission, near the engine, could indicate a failing torque converter seal.
    • Low Fluid Level: Regardless of the leak source, a low fluid level directly impacts transmission performance. Insufficient fluid pressure can cause delayed engagement, slipping, and harsh shifts.
    • Internal Transmission Issues: While less likely to cause an external leak, internal problems like a failing valve body or worn clutch packs can also lead to delayed engagement and rough shifts, often exacerbated by low fluid.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Do not delay. Driving with low transmission fluid can quickly lead to overheating and catastrophic failure of the transmission, resulting in a very expensive repair or replacement. The delayed engagement you're feeling is a direct symptom of this.
    • Have your XT4 towed or driven very carefully to a reputable service center. A technician will need to identify the source of the leak, repair it, and then properly refill the transmission fluid to the correct level. They will also assess if any damage has already occurred due to the low fluid.
