Vehicle: 2019 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury

Hi all,

I've got a 2019 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury with about 35,000 miles. For the past few weeks, I've been dealing with persistent squealing brakes, especially at low speeds. It's really annoying! On top of that, the ABS light has started coming on intermittently, usually after driving for a while, and sometimes the car feels like it takes a bit longer to stop.

I had the pads and rotors checked about 10,000 miles ago and they said they were fine. Could this be related to a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious with the ABS system? Any advice on what I should look into?

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your 2019 Cadillac XT4's symptoms—persistent brake squealing, an intermittent ABS light, and increased stopping distance—point to a problem that needs immediate attention. This combination suggests issues beyond just worn brake pads, likely involving the ABS system or wheel speed sensors.

  1. Brake Squealing:

    • Cause: While often due to worn pads (which you've checked), squealing can also be caused by improper installation, lack of anti-squeal shims, glazed rotors/pads, or even a sticking caliper. If the ABS light is on, it could also be related to an issue that affects brake performance.
  2. Intermittent ABS Light:

    • Cause: This is a critical warning. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) light illuminates when the vehicle's computer detects a fault within the ABS system. The most common cause is a faulty wheel speed sensor or its wiring. If the ABS system is compromised, it can affect braking performance, especially in emergency situations.
  3. Increased Stopping Distance:

    • Cause: This is the most concerning symptom. If your car is taking longer to stop, it indicates a significant problem with the braking system's effectiveness. This could be due to a malfunctioning ABS system, severely worn brake components (despite a recent check), or even issues with the brake fluid or master cylinder (though less likely with your other symptoms).
  4. Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for ABS/Wheel Speed Sensor Issues:

    • C0035: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C0040: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C0045: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C0050: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • Other codes related to the ABS module or pump motor circuit (e.g., C0110, C0121).

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: An intermittent ABS light combined with increased stopping distance is a serious safety concern. Do not delay. Your vehicle's ability to brake effectively is compromised.
  • Recommendation: Take your XT4 to a qualified technician as soon as possible. They will need to connect a diagnostic scanner to retrieve any stored ABS codes, inspect all four wheel speed sensors and their wiring, and thoroughly check the entire braking system, including pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid condition. Addressing this promptly is crucial for your safety and the longevity of your braking system.
