Vehicle: 2022 Cadillac XT4 Sport

Hi all,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2022 Cadillac XT4 Sport. The ABS and Traction Control warning lights on the dash have been coming on intermittently. Sometimes they'll stay on for a whole drive, other times they'll turn off after a few minutes, or even just flicker on and off.

When the lights are on, I don't notice any immediate change in braking performance or handling, but it's definitely concerning. I haven't had any recent work done on the brakes or wheels. The car has about 30,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else with an XT4 or similar Cadillac model encountered this? What should I be looking for? Could it be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious? Any advice would be appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent illumination of the ABS and Traction Control lights on your 2022 Cadillac XT4 Sport is a common indicator of a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or the Traction Control System (TCS). These systems rely heavily on wheel speed sensors, and a problem with one of these is the most frequent cause.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and recommended actions:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) Failure: This is the most likely culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or has an intermittent electrical fault, it sends incorrect or no data to the ABS/TCS module, triggering the warning lights. Common OBD codes include C0035 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), C0040 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit), etc.
    • Damaged Wiring/Connector: The wiring harness or connectors leading to the wheel speed sensors can become corroded, frayed, or damaged, leading to intermittent signals.
    • ABS Module Fault: Less common, but the ABS control module itself could be failing. This is usually a more consistent fault rather than intermittent.
    • Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, bent, or clogged with debris, it can cause erratic readings.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to cause intermittent ABS/TCS lights directly, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger related warnings.
  2. Diagnostic Steps:

    • Scan for Codes: The first and most crucial step is to use an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS/TCS specific codes. This will almost certainly pinpoint which wheel speed sensor or circuit is experiencing the fault. Generic scanners might not read these specific codes.
    • Visual Inspection: Once you have a code, visually inspect the identified wheel speed sensor and its wiring for any obvious damage, corrosion, or debris. Check the tone ring behind the rotor for any visible damage or excessive dirt.
    • Check Brake Fluid Level: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the appropriate level.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: While the car may seem to drive normally, when the ABS and TCS lights are on, these critical safety systems are often disabled. This means you won't have ABS during hard braking or traction control on slippery surfaces, which can be dangerous.
    • For Professional Diagnosis: If you don't have an advanced scanner, or if the visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious issue, take your XT4 to a qualified mechanic or Cadillac dealership. They can accurately diagnose the specific fault, replace the faulty sensor or wiring, and clear the codes.
