Vehicle: 2023 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury

My 2023 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury is having an intermittent issue with the rear view camera. Sometimes when I put it in reverse, the screen either stays black, or I get a distorted, flickering image. Other times, it works perfectly fine. It's really unpredictable.

I've tried cleaning the camera lens, but that didn't help. It's a brand new car, so I'm surprised to be having this problem already. Could it be a loose connection, a software bug, or a faulty camera? Has anyone else with a newer XT4 experienced this, and what was the resolution?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An intermittent rear view camera issue on a new 2023 Cadillac XT4 is certainly concerning. This problem typically points to a few key areas within the electrical system, given the camera's integration with the infotainment and vehicle control modules.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic considerations:

  1. Loose or Damaged Wiring: The most frequent cause of intermittent camera issues is a loose or corroded connection in the wiring harness that runs from the camera (usually in the tailgate) to the infotainment unit or image processing module. The constant opening and closing of the tailgate can stress these wires over time, even in newer vehicles.
  2. Faulty Camera Unit: The camera itself is an electronic component and can fail. Intermittent black screens or distortion often suggest an internal fault within the camera unit.
  3. Software Glitch: The infotainment system or the image processing module's software could have a bug causing it to not properly initialize the camera feed. A software update from the dealership might resolve this.
  4. Infotainment/Image Processing Module: Less commonly, the module responsible for processing the camera's video feed could be faulty. This module interprets the camera's signal and sends it to the display.

OBD Codes to Look For:

When the rear view camera system malfunctions, it often triggers specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can be read with a professional scanner:

  • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module (if the BCM is involved in camera activation).
  • U0253: Lost Communication With Image Processing Module A (or similar, if a dedicated module exists).
  • B-codes: Specific B-codes related to the camera circuit, video signal, or camera unit performance (e.g., B1XXX series).

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Action: Since your XT4 is a 2023 model, it should still be under warranty. This is a perfect scenario for a dealership visit.
  • Professional Diagnosis: A Cadillac dealership will have the specialized diagnostic tools to read manufacturer-specific codes, test the camera unit, inspect the wiring harness, and check for any available software updates. They can accurately pinpoint whether the issue is with the camera, wiring, or a control module and perform the necessary warranty repair.
