2017 XT5 Transmission Fluid Change Interval? Feeling a slight shudder.

Vehicle: 2017 Cadillac XT5 Luxury

Hey everyone,

I have a 2017 Cadillac XT5 Luxury with about 75,000 miles on it. I've been feeling a very slight shudder, mostly when accelerating gently from a stop or at lower speeds. It's not constant, but enough to make me wonder.

I'm looking through my owner's manual for the transmission fluid service interval, and it seems a bit ambiguous. Some sources online suggest a fluid change around 60k-100k miles, especially with some of the 8-speed transmissions. Is this something I should be looking into? Could the shudder be related to old fluid?

Any advice on DIY vs. dealership for this, or if it's even necessary at this mileage, would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's a good idea to consider a transmission fluid service for your 2017 Cadillac XT5 Luxury at 75,000 miles, especially if you're experiencing a shudder. While some manufacturers claim 'lifetime' fluid, fluid degradation can occur, leading to performance issues.

Causes of Shudder & Fluid Degradation:

  • Fluid Breakdown: Over time and mileage, transmission fluid loses its lubricating properties and can accumulate metallic particles, reducing its effectiveness. This can lead to increased friction and shuddering.
  • Internal Wear: Worn clutch packs or torque converter issues can also contribute to shuddering, which can be exacerbated by old fluid.
  • Temperature: High operating temperatures accelerate fluid breakdown.

Recommended Action Steps:

  1. Check Fluid Level & Condition: First, have the transmission fluid level checked. On many modern transmissions, this requires specific procedures and tools. Also, inspect the fluid's color and smell. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a strong indicator of degradation.
  2. Consider a Drain & Fill (or Flush): For your mileage and symptoms, a transmission fluid drain and fill is often recommended. This replaces a portion of the old fluid with new. A full flush, while more comprehensive, can sometimes dislodge particles in older, high-mileage transmissions, potentially causing new issues if not done correctly. Consult with a trusted mechanic on the best approach for your specific vehicle.
  3. Use Correct Fluid: Ensure that any fluid used meets GM's DEXRON-VI specification for your XT5's 8-speed automatic transmission. Using the wrong fluid can cause severe damage.
  4. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Although a shudder isn't always tied to a specific code, a scan tool might reveal codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or other transmission-related codes that could point to underlying issues.

When to See a Shop:

  • Persistent or Worsening Shudder: If the shudder continues or gets worse after a fluid service, or if it's accompanied by harsh shifts, slipping, or a check engine light.
  • Difficulty Checking Fluid: If you're not comfortable performing the fluid check yourself, as it often requires the vehicle to be level and at a specific temperature.
  • Suspected Internal Damage: If a diagnostic scan reveals specific transmission component failure codes, or if the fluid appears severely contaminated, indicating potential internal wear that a fluid change alone won't fix. A professional can diagnose if the torque converter or other internal components are the root cause.
