Vehicle: 2018 Cadillac XT5 Luxury

Hi everyone, I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2018 Cadillac XT5 Luxury, 3.6L V6. For the past few weeks, it's been intermittently stalling when I come to a stop or am driving at very low speeds, like in a parking lot. It usually restarts right away, but it's concerning.

Along with the stalling, I'm frequently getting a 'Service StabiliTrak' message on the dash, and sometimes the check engine light comes on. I scanned it with my basic OBD-II reader, and I'm getting a P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1) and sometimes a C0561 (System Disabled Information Stored) code.

The car has about 70,000 miles. I've checked for obvious vacuum leaks but haven't found anything. Could these issues be related? Any ideas on where to start looking?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Address P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1) First: The P0171 code indicates that the engine's computer is detecting too much oxygen in the exhaust on Bank 1, meaning the engine is running lean. This is a critical issue that can cause stalling and other driveability problems.
    • Vacuum Leaks: This is the most common cause. Thoroughly inspect all vacuum lines, intake manifold gaskets, PCV valve and hose, and brake booster for leaks. A smoke test is often the most effective way to find these.
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or faulty MAF sensor can report incorrect air flow, leading the engine to inject too little fuel. Try cleaning the MAF sensor with specialized MAF cleaner.
    • Fuel System Issues: A weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause insufficient fuel delivery.
    • Oxygen Sensor: A faulty upstream oxygen sensor on Bank 1 could be reporting incorrect data, though it's less common for it to cause a lean condition without also setting an O2 sensor specific code.
  2. Investigate C0561 (System Disabled Information Stored): This code often appears when other systems, like the engine control module (ECM), are experiencing issues that affect vehicle stability or traction control. It's likely a symptom of the P0171 and stalling rather than a direct cause. Once the lean condition is resolved, the StabiliTrak message may clear itself or can be cleared.
  3. Check for Related Sensor Issues: A faulty throttle body or accelerator pedal position sensor could also contribute to stalling, though the P0171 points more directly to air/fuel mixture.
  4. When to See a Shop: Given the intermittent stalling and the combination of codes, it's highly recommended to have your XT5 diagnosed by a professional technician, especially if you can't locate a vacuum leak or if cleaning the MAF sensor doesn't resolve the P0171. A shop can perform a smoke test, check fuel pressure, and use advanced scan tools to monitor live data from sensors, which is crucial for diagnosing lean conditions and intermittent issues. Driving with a persistent lean condition can lead to engine damage and catalytic converter failure.
