Vehicle: 2018 Cadillac XT5 Luxury

Hi all,

I've got a 2018 Cadillac XT5 Luxury with about 75,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been noticing a slight shudder or vibration, especially when accelerating gently around 30-45 mph. It's not constant, but it's definitely there and feels like it's coming from the drivetrain.

I've read online that some GM vehicles can experience this and that a transmission fluid flush might help. Is 75k miles too early or just right for a transmission fluid change on an XT5? What kind of fluid should be used, and is this something a competent DIYer can tackle, or is it best left to the pros? Any advice would be great.

The shudder you're experiencing in your 2018 Cadillac XT5 Luxury at 75,000 miles is a common concern that can often be resolved with proper transmission maintenance.

  1. Potential Causes of Shudder:
    • Transmission Fluid Degradation: Over time, transmission fluid can break down, losing its lubricating and friction-modifying properties, leading to clutch slippage and shudder.
    • Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can also cause shudder, often exacerbated by degraded fluid.
    • Other Drivetrain Components: Less commonly, issues with drive shafts, U-joints, or engine mounts could contribute, but fluid is a primary suspect for this symptom.
  2. Transmission Fluid Service: For your 2018 XT5, Cadillac generally recommends inspecting the transmission fluid at 45,000 miles and changing it every 90,000 miles under normal conditions. However, if you frequently tow, drive in heavy city traffic, or in very hot climates, a fluid change at 75,000 miles is a very reasonable preventative measure and could certainly address your shudder.
  3. Fluid Type: Your XT5's 8-speed automatic transmission requires Dexron-VI (Dexron 6) automatic transmission fluid. Using any other type can cause significant damage.
  4. DIY vs. Professional: A full transmission fluid flush and filter replacement is a complex job that requires specialized equipment to ensure all old fluid is removed and the system is properly refilled without air pockets. While a simple drain and fill can be done by an experienced DIYer, it only replaces a portion of the fluid. For a complete and effective service, especially when addressing a shudder, it's highly recommended to have a professional shop perform a full flush and filter replacement.

When to See a Shop: If the shudder persists after a fluid change, or if you notice any new warning lights (e.g., 'Service Transmission'), delayed shifts, or harsh engagements, immediately take your XT5 to a Cadillac dealership or a reputable transmission specialist. Continued driving with a significant transmission issue can lead to more severe and costly damage.
