Vehicle: 2020 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with the Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA) system in my 2020 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury. For the past few days, I've been getting a 'Service Side Blind Zone Alert System' message on my dash, and the system itself seems to be completely inactive. The little warning lights in the side mirrors don't illuminate when a car is in my blind spot, and the system doesn't chime.

I've checked for any obvious obstructions on the rear bumper where the sensors are located, but everything looks clear. There hasn't been any recent body work or accidents. Could this be a sensor failure, or perhaps a wiring issue? Is there a common OBD code associated with this type of problem?

It's a safety feature I rely on, so I'm keen to get it fixed. Any insights or similar experiences with your XT5s would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Service Side Blind Zone Alert System' message in your 2020 Cadillac XT5 indicates a fault within the SBZA system, which relies on radar sensors and a control module. This is a common electrical and electronics issue.

  1. Sensor Malfunction: The most common cause is a faulty radar sensor. Your XT5 has two radar sensors located behind the rear bumper fascia, one on each side. These sensors can fail due to internal component issues, water intrusion, or physical damage (even minor impacts that don't visibly damage the bumper).
  2. Wiring or Connector Issues: The wiring harness connecting the sensors to the SBZA control module, or the connectors themselves, can become corroded, loose, or damaged. This can interrupt communication or power to the sensors.
  3. Control Module Failure: Less common, but the Side Blind Zone Alert control module itself could be faulty. This module processes the data from the sensors and communicates with the vehicle's BCM (Body Control Module).
  4. Calibration Issues: After a sensor replacement or even a minor bumper repair, the SBZA system often requires recalibration using specialized diagnostic equipment. If a sensor's alignment is off, it won't function correctly.
  5. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): When the SBZA system malfunctions, it will typically store specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the SBZA module. Common codes might include:
    • B0083: Side Blind Zone Module Performance
    • B0084: Right Side Object Sensor Performance
    • B0085: Left Side Object Sensor Performance
    • U0151: Lost Communication with Sensing and Diagnostic Module (if it's a communication issue).

When to See a Shop:

Since the SBZA system is a critical safety feature and requires specialized diagnostic tools for accurate troubleshooting and potential recalibration, it's essential to take your XT5 to a Cadillac dealership or a certified automotive electrical repair shop. They can read the specific DTCs, test the sensors, inspect the wiring, and perform any necessary replacements and calibrations.
