Vehicle: 2021 Cadillac XT5 Sport

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2021 Cadillac XT5 Sport and its Blind Spot Monitoring system. Recently, I've been getting a 'Service Blind Spot Monitoring System' message on the dash, and the warning lights in the side mirrors are no longer illuminating when vehicles are in my blind spot. It's happening on both sides, not just one.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper where the sensors are located, thinking maybe dirt or mud was blocking them, but that hasn't helped. There's no visible damage to the bumper either. It just stopped working out of the blue.

Is this a common sensor failure, or could it be a wiring issue? I rely on this feature a lot, so I'm keen to get it fixed. Any advice on what I should check or expect?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Understand the BSM System: The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system in your 2021 Cadillac XT5 uses radar sensors, typically located behind the rear bumper fascia, to detect vehicles in your blind spots. The system relies on these sensors, associated wiring, and a control module to function correctly and illuminate the warning indicators in your side mirrors.

  2. Common Causes for BSM Errors:

    • Sensor Failure: The radar sensors themselves can fail due to internal electronic issues, water intrusion, or physical damage (even if not visible externally).
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring harnesses connecting the sensors to the BSM control module can interrupt communication.
    • Module Malfunction: The BSM control module (sometimes integrated into a larger body control module) can develop internal faults.
    • Obstruction: While you've cleaned the bumper, sometimes even a thin layer of ice, heavy snow, or a minor bumper misalignment can block the radar signal.
    • Software Glitch: Less common, but sometimes a software issue within the vehicle's electronic systems can cause a temporary fault.
  3. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Visual Inspection: Re-inspect the rear bumper area very closely for any subtle impacts or damage that might have shifted a sensor. Check for any loose connectors if you can safely access them.
    • Battery Reset (Temporary): Disconnecting the battery for 15-30 minutes can sometimes clear minor electronic glitches, but it's unlikely to fix a hardware failure.
    • OBD-II Scan: A standard OBD-II scanner might not pick up specific BSM codes, as they are often manufacturer-specific. However, a more advanced diagnostic tool (like those used by dealerships or specialized shops) can communicate with the BSM module and retrieve specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) related to sensor performance, communication errors (e.g., U0xxx codes), or module faults.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: Since the system is critical for safety, it's best to have it diagnosed by a professional as soon as possible. Driving without functioning BSM can increase accident risk.
    • A Cadillac dealership or a reputable independent shop with advanced diagnostic equipment will be able to:
      • Scan for specific BSM module codes.
      • Perform sensor calibration checks.
      • Test sensor output and wiring continuity.
      • Determine if a sensor, wiring harness, or the control module needs replacement. Replacing these components often requires recalibration using specialized tools.
