Vehicle: 2022 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury

I have a 2022 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury with about 35,000 miles. Lately, when I turn on the AC, there's a really unpleasant musty, mildew-like smell coming from the vents. It's especially noticeable when I first start the car or when the AC has been running for a while.

Also, it feels like the airflow isn't as strong as it used to be, even on high fan settings. I'm wondering if this is a cabin air filter issue or something else with the AC system.

Is changing the cabin air filter a simple DIY job on the XT6? What else could cause this smell, and what can I do to get rid of it?

A musty smell and reduced airflow in your 2022 Cadillac XT6 are very common complaints, and thankfully, often have straightforward solutions related to routine maintenance.

Here's what's likely happening and how to address it:

  1. Cabin Air Filter: This is the most common culprit for both reduced airflow and musty smells. The cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, and other airborne particles before they enter your vehicle's cabin. Over time, it gets clogged, restricting airflow, and can harbor moisture and mildew, leading to that unpleasant odor.
    • DIY Replacement: Changing the cabin air filter on an XT6 is a relatively simple DIY job. It's typically located behind the glove box. You'll usually need to open the glove box, unclip or remove a few fasteners, and then slide out the old filter and insert the new one. There are many online videos specific to the XT6 that can guide you.
  2. Evaporator Coil: The musty smell often originates from the evaporator coil, which is part of your AC system. When the AC runs, condensation forms on the cold evaporator coil. If moisture lingers, it can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
    • AC Refresh Treatment: You can purchase AC system refresh kits (often aerosol cans with a long tube) that are designed to clean and disinfect the evaporator coil. These are typically sprayed into the AC intake or drain tube.
  3. Clogged Condensate Drain: The AC system has a drain tube to expel condensation from the evaporator. If this tube gets clogged, water can back up, leading to excessive moisture and mildew growth.

Causes of Musty Smell & Reduced Airflow:

  • Clogged or dirty cabin air filter.
  • Mold/mildew growth on the evaporator coil.
  • Clogged AC condensate drain.

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing the cabin air filter and performing an AC refresh doesn't eliminate the smell or improve airflow.
  • If you notice water leaking inside the cabin (indicating a clogged drain or other issue).
  • If the AC system isn't cooling effectively, which could point to a refrigerant leak or compressor issue, requiring professional diagnosis and repair.
