2016 Silverado 1500 Transmission Shudder and Hard Shifts - What's going on?

Hey everyone, I've got a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ with the 5.3L V8 and the 8-speed automatic transmission, and I'm really concerned about its reliability lately. For the past few months, I've been experiencing a noticeable shudder, especially when accelerating at lower speeds or when the transmission shifts between gears 2-4.

It feels like I'm driving over rumble strips sometimes, and the shifts themselves have become very harsh and clunky. I'm worried this is a major transmission issue. I've heard about problems with these 8-speed transmissions. Is this something that's covered by a TSB or a known defect? What should I be looking for?

I'm at about 85,000 miles, and I've tried to keep up with maintenance. Any advice on what steps I should take before heading to the dealership? I'm hoping it's not a complete transmission replacement.

Summary: For 2016 Silverado 1500 Transmission Shudder and Hard Shifts - What's going on?, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
