Vehicle: 2017 Chevrolet Malibu LT

I have a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu LT, and the infotainment screen has started flickering on and off quite a bit. Sometimes it just goes completely black for a few seconds before coming back on. It's really distracting while driving.

To add to that, the backup camera is very intermittent; sometimes it works perfectly when I put it in reverse, and other times it just shows a black screen or a 'Service Rear Vision System' message. Is this a common issue with these systems in the Malibu? What should I be looking for?

Intermittent infotainment screen flickering and backup camera issues in your 2017 Chevrolet Malibu LT are often linked and can be quite frustrating. These problems typically point to electrical connectivity, software glitches, or a failing component within the infotainment system.

  1. Check Connections:

    • Loose Wiring: The most common cause is a loose or corroded connection behind the infotainment unit or at the camera itself. Vibrations from driving can cause these connections to momentarily break, leading to flickering or intermittent operation.
    • Ground Wires: A poor ground connection can also cause erratic electrical behavior. Ensure all ground points for the infotainment system are clean and secure.
  2. Software Glitch/Update:

    • Sometimes, a software bug in the infotainment system (HMI module) can cause these issues. Check with a Chevrolet dealership to see if there are any available software updates for your specific system. A factory reset of the infotainment system might also temporarily resolve minor glitches.
  3. Failing Components:

    • HMI Module: The Human Machine Interface (HMI) module is the brain of your infotainment system. If it's failing, it can cause a range of display and functionality problems.
    • Backup Camera Unit: The camera itself could be failing, or its internal wiring might be compromised.
    • Display Screen: Less likely, but the display panel itself could be faulty, though this usually results in more consistent issues rather than intermittent flickering.

When to See a Shop: If checking visible connections doesn't resolve the issue, it's best to take your Malibu to a Chevrolet dealership or a reputable automotive electronics specialist. They have the diagnostic tools to read specific codes from the infotainment system (which are different from powertrain OBD codes) and can accurately pinpoint whether the problem is a wiring harness, a module, or the camera itself. Early diagnosis can prevent more extensive electrical issues down the line.
