Vehicle: 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT

Hey everyone, I'm having some serious issues with my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT, which has the 5.3L V8 and the 8-speed automatic transmission. It's got about 65,000 miles on it.

Lately, I've noticed a distinct shudder, especially when accelerating lightly between 40-70 mph. It feels like driving over rumble strips, but it's definitely coming from the drivetrain. Also, the transmission has started making some really hard shifts, particularly from 1st to 2nd gear when cold, and sometimes clunks into gear after slowing down.

I'm worried about this, as I've heard these 8-speed transmissions can have problems. Has anyone else experienced this, and what was your fix? Is this something I should take to the dealer immediately?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This sounds like a common issue with the 8L90 and 8L45 8-speed automatic transmissions in certain GM trucks and SUVs, often referred to as the 'Chevy Shudder' or 'transmission shudder.'

Common Causes:

  1. Transmission Fluid Degradation: The original transmission fluid (Dexron HP) in these units can break down prematurely, leading to friction and wear within the torque converter and clutch packs. This is the most frequent cause of the shudder.
  2. Torque Converter Issues: A faulty torque converter can also contribute to the shudder, as it's responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission.
  3. Valve Body Problems: Less commonly, issues with the transmission's valve body or solenoids can cause harsh shifting.

Diagnostic Steps & Potential Fixes:

  1. Check for TSBs: Chevrolet issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSB 18-NA-355 and later revisions) addressing this issue. The primary recommended fix involves performing a triple flush of the transmission fluid and replacing it with Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid. This new fluid has different friction modifiers that help mitigate the shudder.
  2. Inspect for Codes: While a shudder might not always trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL), a transmission control module (TCM) might store codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or P0701 (Transmission Control System Range/Performance). A professional scan tool can check for these.
  3. Test Drive & Evaluation: A qualified technician should perform a test drive to confirm the shudder and hard shift characteristics.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If you are experiencing these symptoms, it's highly recommended to take your Silverado to a reputable shop or Chevrolet dealership as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a shuddering transmission can lead to further, more severe damage to the transmission and torque converter.
  • Warranty: Check if your vehicle is still under powertrain warranty, as this issue may be covered.
