Vehicle: 2022 Chevrolet Malibu RS

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2022 Chevrolet Malibu RS.

My remote start has suddenly stopped working. When I try to use it, the lights flash, but the engine doesn't start. Also, I've noticed my key fob sometimes struggles to lock/unlock the doors, and I have to be really close to the car. I've already replaced the battery in the key fob, but it didn't help.

Could this be a problem with the car's receiver, or something else entirely? It's really inconvenient, especially in cold weather.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with remote start and key fob range on your 2022 Chevrolet Malibu RS can be frustrating and often point to a communication problem between the key fob and the vehicle's Body Control Module (BCM) or a related system.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Try a Spare Fob: If you have a second key fob, test if it exhibits the same issues. If the spare works perfectly, the problem is likely with your primary fob, even if you replaced the battery.
  2. Check for Interference: Ensure you are not in an area with strong radio frequency interference when testing, as this can temporarily block signals.
  3. Inspect Vehicle Battery: A weak 12V car battery, even if it can start the car, can sometimes cause issues with electrical accessories and remote functions. Have your vehicle's main battery tested.
  4. Scan for BCM Codes: A professional scan tool can access the BCM and other relevant modules to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to key fob communication, remote start, or security systems. Look for codes like B3105 (Key Fob Battery Low) or B3109 (Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Performance).

Common Causes:

  • Key Fob Malfunction: Even with a new battery, the fob itself can fail internally.
  • Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) Issues: This module in the vehicle receives the key fob's signals. It can sometimes fail or have a loose connection.
  • Antenna Issues: The antenna for the RCDLR might be obstructed or faulty, reducing range.
  • Vehicle Battery Voltage: Low voltage from the main car battery can cause various electrical gremlins, including remote function problems.
  • BCM Software/Hardware: Less common, but issues with the Body Control Module itself can affect these functions.

When to See a Shop: Since you've already replaced the fob battery, and if a spare fob doesn't resolve the problem, it's best to have your Malibu inspected by a Chevrolet service center. They can perform a thorough diagnostic of the RCDLR, BCM, and related wiring, and re-program or replace components as needed to restore full functionality to your remote start and key fob.
