Vehicle: 2022 Chevrolet Traverse Premier

Hello,

My 2022 Chevrolet Traverse Premier, 3.6L V6, just displayed the dreaded "Service StabiliTrak" message on the dash, followed almost immediately by "Reduced Engine Power." The Check Engine Light also came on. The car is barely drivable, very sluggish, and feels like it's in limp mode.

I haven't had a chance to scan for codes yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else with a newer Traverse has experienced this. It happened suddenly while driving on the highway. I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and the messages cleared for a few minutes but then came back.

What are the common causes for this combination of warnings on these vehicles? Is it safe to drive it a short distance to a mechanic, or should I get it towed?

The combination of "Service StabiliTrak" and "Reduced Engine Power" messages on your 2022 Chevrolet Traverse, especially with the Check Engine Light, indicates a significant issue that the engine control module (ECM) has detected. The vehicle is intentionally limiting power to prevent further damage, which is why it feels sluggish (limp mode).

Common causes for these combined warnings often relate to issues that affect engine performance or sensor readings critical for stability control:

  1. Throttle Body Issues: A dirty, failing, or faulty electronic throttle body is a very common cause. It can lead to incorrect airflow readings and directly trigger reduced engine power.
  2. Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APP): A problem with the sensor that tells the ECM how much you're pressing the gas pedal can cause these warnings.
  3. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A contaminated or failing MAF sensor can provide incorrect air intake data, leading to fuel mixture problems and triggering limp mode.
  4. Engine Misfires or Sensor Failures: Severe engine misfires (e.g., from bad spark plugs, coils, or injectors) or failures of critical engine sensors (like crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor) can confuse the ECM and trigger these warnings.
  5. Brake Light Switch: Less common for reduced power, but a faulty brake light switch can sometimes interfere with StabiliTrak operation.

When to see a shop:

  • Safety First: Driving with "Reduced Engine Power" is generally not recommended for long distances or at highway speeds. If the vehicle is severely limited, it's safest to have it towed to avoid potential hazards or further damage.
  • Professional Diagnosis: A professional shop will use a diagnostic scanner to retrieve all stored trouble codes (not just generic OBD-II codes) from the ECM and other modules. These specific codes will be crucial in pinpointing the exact cause. They can also perform live data monitoring to observe sensor readings and system performance in real-time, which is essential for accurate diagnosis.
