Vehicle: 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premier

Hello fellow Chevy owners,

I'm having an issue with my 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premier, which has about 80,000 miles. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control light (TCS) recently illuminated on my dashboard. They came on simultaneously and have stayed on. I haven't noticed any immediate change in braking performance, but I'm concerned about driving with these critical systems disabled.

I tried turning the car off and on, but the lights remain. Is this usually a straightforward sensor issue, or could it be something more serious with the ABS module itself? Has anyone else experienced this with their Malibu?

Any advice on what to check or what common OBD codes might be associated with this would be very helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both your ABS and Traction Control lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premier, it almost always indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Since the Traction Control System (TCS) relies on the ABS for wheel speed data, a problem with ABS will often disable TCS as well.

  1. Common Causes & Diagnostics:

    • Wheel Speed Sensors: These are the most frequent culprits. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails, gets dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS module can't get accurate data. Common OBD-II codes related to this are in the C0035-C0050 range (e.g., C0035 for Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor, C0040 for Right Front, etc.).
    • ABS Wiring/Connectors: Inspect the wiring harnesses leading to each wheel speed sensor for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
    • ABS Tone Ring: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or damaged, it can send erratic signals.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less common for simultaneous ABS/TCS lights, low brake fluid can sometimes trigger brake warning lights, which might interact with other systems.
    • ABS Module Failure: Although less common than sensor issues, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually indicated by more complex or multiple fault codes that don't point to a specific sensor.
  2. What to Do:

    • Scan for Codes: The first and most crucial step is to use an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes. Generic scanners often only read engine codes (P-codes), so you'll need one that can access the ABS module (C-codes). This will pinpoint the exact sensor or circuit causing the issue.
    • Visual Inspection: Once you have a code, visually inspect the sensor and wiring at the indicated wheel for any obvious damage or debris.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Driving with these lights on means your ABS and TCS are disabled. While your regular brakes will still function, you lose the safety benefits of anti-lock braking and traction control, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions.
    • If you can't read the codes yourself, or if the codes point to something beyond a simple sensor replacement (like an ABS module issue), it's best to take your Malibu to a qualified mechanic. They have specialized diagnostic tools and expertise to accurately diagnose and repair ABS system faults.
