Vehicle: 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT

Hey everyone, I'm having some serious issues with my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT, 5.3L V8. Lately, the transmission has been shifting really hard, especially between 1st and 2nd, and sometimes 3rd and 4th gears. It feels like a jolt.

To make matters worse, the Check Engine Light came on a few days ago. I'm worried this is a major transmission problem. I've heard about issues with the 8-speed automatic transmissions in these trucks.

Has anyone else experienced this? What could be causing it? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can address myself or if it's a guaranteed trip to the dealership. Any advice on what to look for or common fixes would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with the 8-speed automatic transmission (8L90/8L45) in certain GM trucks, including your 2017 Silverado. The rough shifting and Check Engine Light (CEL) are strong indicators of a potential problem. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Get the OBD Codes Read: The first step is to visit an auto parts store or a mechanic to have the CEL codes scanned. Common codes related to transmission issues include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0716 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance), P0729 (Gear 6 Incorrect Ratio), or other specific gear ratio errors. These codes will provide crucial diagnostic direction.

  2. Potential Causes:

    • Torque Converter Issues: A common culprit in these transmissions is a failing torque converter, which can lead to shuddering and rough shifts. This often contaminates the transmission fluid.
    • Transmission Fluid Degradation: Over time, the original transmission fluid (Dexron HP) can break down, leading to clutch material wear and poor lubrication, exacerbating shifting problems. GM has issued TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) related to flushing the transmission and replacing the fluid with a newer, improved formula (Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP).
    • Valve Body/Solenoid Problems: Malfunctioning solenoids or issues within the valve body can also cause erratic shifting.
    • Software Glitches: Less commonly, a transmission control module (TCM) software update might be needed, though this usually doesn't cause a CEL without other hardware issues.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Given the CEL and severe shifting, it's highly recommended to have your Silverado inspected by a qualified mechanic or a Chevrolet dealership as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can lead to more extensive and costly damage to the transmission.
    • Specialized Tools: Transmission diagnostics and repairs often require specialized tools and knowledge, especially for internal components or fluid flushes that need specific procedures.
    • Warranty Check: If your vehicle is still under an extended powertrain warranty, ensure you take it to a dealership to maintain coverage. Be sure to inquire about any applicable TSBs for your specific model and year, such as TSB 18-NA-355 or similar, which address transmission shudder and fluid replacement.
