Vehicle: 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

I've got a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 with the 3.6L V6 engine, and it's recently started running really rough. The check engine light came on, and when I scanned it, I got multiple P0301, P0303, and P0305 codes, indicating misfires on cylinders 1, 3, and 5. The engine idles very roughly, and I can feel a definite lack of power when accelerating.

I'm at about 45,000 miles, and I haven't done much in terms of major tune-ups yet, just regular oil changes. Could this be spark plugs, or something else more serious? I'm hoping it's something I can tackle in my garage this weekend.

Any guidance on where to start troubleshooting would be awesome. I'm trying to avoid a big repair bill if it's just a maintenance item that's overdue.

ClearTheCode admin answer: Multiple misfire codes (P030X) on specific cylinders, especially at 45,000 miles, often point to ignition system components or fuel delivery issues. For your 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 with the 3.6L V6, here's a logical diagnostic and maintenance approach:

  1. Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs:

    • At 45,000 miles, spark plugs are a prime suspect. Worn or fouled plugs can lead to misfires.
    • The 3.6L V6 uses iridium spark plugs, which typically have a longer lifespan, but misfires can still occur if they're fouled or defective.
    • When replacing, always use the correct AC Delco or equivalent OEM-spec iridium plugs and ensure they are properly gapped (check your owner's manual for specifications).
  2. Check Ignition Coils:

    • Each cylinder has its own ignition coil. While you have the spark plugs out, visually inspect the ignition coils for any cracks, burn marks, or corrosion.
    • You can try swapping coils from a misfiring cylinder (e.g., cylinder 1) to a non-misfiring cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2). Clear the codes, drive the vehicle, and re-scan. If the misfire code moves to cylinder 2 (P0302), then the coil is faulty.
  3. Inspect Air Filter and PCV Valve:

    • A severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow and affect the air-fuel mixture, contributing to rough running. Check and replace if dirty.
    • A faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can also cause rough idle and misfires by disrupting manifold vacuum. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy part to check/replace.
  4. Fuel System Inspection (Less likely for multiple cylinders, but possible):

    • While less common for multiple specific cylinders, a clogged fuel injector on one of the misfiring cylinders could be a cause. You could try adding a high-quality fuel system cleaner to the tank.

Causes of Misfires (P030X):

  • Worn or fouled spark plugs.
  • Faulty ignition coils.
  • Vacuum leaks (less likely for specific cylinders, but can cause rough idle).
  • Clogged or faulty fuel injectors.
  • Low compression (more serious, requires a compression test).

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing spark plugs and swapping coils doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you suspect a fuel injector problem (a shop can perform fuel pressure and injector balance tests).
  • If a compression test is needed to rule out internal engine issues.
